I had absolutely no clue wat the story would b when I entered the theatre to watch Sanjay Gupta's Zinda. Wat I witnessed on the screen, was not sumthin attempted by Bollywood ever before.
Zinda is borrowed heavily frm Chanwook Park's Oldboy. Zinda offers a story which is intricate, unsettling, heart wrenching at times.
Sanjay Dutt, a software engineer, who's happily married to Celina, shifts to Bangkok for work. He's abducted & imprisoned inside a seedy one- celled room by mysterious captors. After 14 yrs of plotting revenge on his captors, Dutt keeps fit by punching walls & learning the intricacies of martial art by watching T.V. & survives by eating fried wontons. In captivity he learns of his wife's murder for which he is being framed. Just as he's suddenly abducted, he finds himself released.
The cat & mouse game then begins. For Dutt, it's a game of life & death. Dutt in his endeavour to discover why he was so tortured, has a cab driver Lara, who knows the alleys & streets of Bangkok like the lines on her palms & her frnd Mahesh, to help him. Sanjay sets abt his torturous job & eventually he collides into his tormentor- a dapper John who tells him he has only four days to find out the truth & seek revenge- kill or be killed. Sanjay finds that the answers to his questions are even stranger than his incomprehensible predicament.
Solid acting by Sanjay is inimitable in his Kafkaesque essayal of human anguish. He's brilliant in his role which requires him to be violent & cold, requires him to go down on his knees begging & pleading before his tormentor, as it requires him to seethe with anger & helplessness.
John's appearance after the interval as the cold & calculating plotter whose sole mission in life is Sanjay's elimination, is impressive. He slips into a murderer's role easily.
Celina & Lara provide the glamour quotient. Celina looks captivating in her small role.
Zinda is a compelling melodrama that is aided by brilliant cinematography. With the characters bordering on greys, the film becomes dark & gruelling. Zinda is intriguing & displays raw energy. There are quite a few flaws in the film but the compelling yarn of life & death keeps u glued to ur seat
