I've been waiting to hear A.R. Rahman new music album for about a month!! After Meenaxi, (an amazing album by the way) I wanted to hear the differences from what I learnt from Meenaxi and then this one. Two very different contrasts which is so interesting. Oh, and by the way, I WANT TO SEE THIS MOVIE SO BADLY! AMAZING CAST!!! (well, except for Deol).
1. Badal - Adnan Sami & Alka Yagnik - A new electronic type of music A.R. Rahman Saheb has used. It's been a long time hearing Adnan Sami singing, and his voice does not takes over Alka Yagnik. Yet, his nice, soulful voice is behind Alka's sweet voice during the whole song.
It starts out with soft drums, and electric bass, and some synthesiser (an up and down note - different). Then the chorus comes out saying ''Aiy yai yai yai'', and then Adnan voice starts up (he does a little mumbling.. lol). Alka voice comes up ''Badal Baharyai..... It has simple lyrics written by Mehboob, this sounds like an Abhishek & Rani song, but I could be wrong. Hey, it's a love song that has a lot of ''masti'' words in it.. lol... Different tunes, different instruments as always from A.R. Rahman. Guitar and more rock-style drums are used in the beginning of the first verse, and then a bit more tabla, drums and spanish guitar before the second verse. Not a bad song, it may grow on me. My Rating - 7/10
2. Dhakka Laga Bukka - A R Rahman, Karthik & Mehboob - Electric guitar slowly ascends to a higher volume, and Karthik voice screams out.
A triuet (duet except it's three people! lol I made it up) by Rahman, Mehboob & Karthik. Tabla in front and drums in behind with electric guitar strolling along.. A more soft rock in it, with some ... (Is it me, or does it sounds like ''Eena Meena Deeka'' from ''Dhakka Laga Bukka'' ... in the beginning)... lol.. A.R. Rahman's voice is heard more in this song. Somewhere between the song, heavy percussions is heard (yea!) and other special sound effects. More and more guitar and drums are used near the end of this song. My Rating - 6.5/10
3. Dol Dol - Instrumental/Blaaze & Ethnic Vocals - A different fast techno/rap/rockish/orchestra/voice song.
It starts with a woman doing some English style voicing and then some weird type of words... I love the drumming from this song! Many rolls, and flams in it.... (Drumming term...) It's obviously Shiv Ji doing the percussion parts throughout the song. Blaaze, does “Dol Dol ma ma pe, Dol Dol ma ma pe, Dol Dol ma ma pe salaam namasthe” the whole time. Catchy, makes you hyper lol.... My Rating - 9/10
4. Fanaa - A R Rahman, Sunitha Sarathy & Tanvi - I think A.R. Rahman has been using more techno music after Tehzeeb's ''I wanna be free''.
Sunitha's voice sounds similar to Nazia Hassan's voice (Pakistani pop singer). So basically, this is an youth film, as it's called ''YUVA''. So it's like a message to all the youths to ''do whatever you feel like, don't care what others think of you''. Tanvi's voice sounds so similar to Shankar Mahadevan. So a dance song, with non-stop gino type of music. dut dut dut dut dut dut.. the whole time... My Rating - 6/10
5. Kabhi Neem Neem - Madhushree, A R Rahman - A.R. Rahman! Male lead!!!
Finally, an Indian/Tamil music. A soft, simple romantic song sung by Madhuhree throughout. You know the usual tabla, soft guitar strums, and payali music. Cute, lovey-dovey type. My Rating - 7/10
6. Khuda Hafiz - Sunitha Sarathy, Lucky Ali & Karthik - Hey, Khuda Hafiz, Shukriya Meherbaani....
A soft whispery voice Sunitha brings out in the beginning.... and then drumming rolls louder and louder and a strong male voice says ''ANJANA!!!! ANJANI!!!'' Quite cool, again drums, great electric bass, and of course synthesiser. ''Whoooaaahhooooaa Whoooaahooooaa''. The guys are the loud, powerful voice, while the female singer brings out a seductive type of music from her. My Rating - 7/10
Sadly, it's not the best A.R. Rahman's album, but it is different, and nice. I think A.R. Rahman is best with his old traditional type. But I could be wrong, this may be the biggest album of the year. IMHO, I really love Meenaxi, I think that is one his best albums released recently, (2003-2004).
