Well , here we go again. The Old Yezdi. Something which came over from Czechoslavakia. Well , what kind of a name is that ...not yezdi , Czechoslavakia, I mean. That is the first thing that comes to the mind of a properly raised Indian ( the indian who believes in all the stupid crap that comes his way. :-) ). But before we go name bashing here, this beauty did come from Czechoslavakia and lets call it Czech...Rajeev_Vermacially since they have themselves changed.. And before we go getting surprsied about where this beauty came from ..lets know one more fact. Yana Gupta came from there too !!! That surely makes it easier to accept it now , doesnt it ? Well this beauty came from there and so did one more of it little known sibling. The twin exhaust Yezdi. Am sure that not many of today's dudes are even aware of that..that with the Yamaha RD 350, there was another one of these twin exhaust babies...one which did not have the trouble of doing settings for 2 carbs. :) (This baby had a single carb.). Back to the sibling 'Classic', well I have had the pleasure of riding it for about 5-6 years before finally I sold it off. (Wanted to get another of my dream bikes, the RX 100). Well , when I first got it, I lived in a small town and the bike itself was from an even smaller town, right down to the point where the RTO did not even reach. SO when I got the bike, it was being run on kerosene with a special inlet to the carb from a 100 ml oil bottle (which contained petrol). This bottle we switched on only to start the bike. Needless to say the first thing I did when I got the bike was send it to the mechanic and get the block and piston work done and made it a point to ride it on PETROL (and oil) ONLY. Slowly as the piston wore in I found that the ride became beautiful day by day. It was almost like marriage. 2 people getting into each other day by day and finally becoming one. So after a few months , I became one too with the Czech beauty. (Yezdi , not Yana..BTW any more Y's from Czech around , cos I kinda admire the Y's from there ). And I found out that this beauty had much more to offer than was on display. Most people called it an old bike which had no future, no resale...(how many guys think abt their wives like that ????) Well after the amalgamation of me and my bike I found out that this baby could take turns an a higher speed and with much lesser worries abt toppling over. Try taking a sharp turn on a 100 cc @ 65 kmph and you will have that apprehension no matter what. But this baby does not make you worry even the slightest you will not even realise that the bike is running at that speed. And then I remember this one time that I was riding the baby at abt 70 kmph and this nice guy on a Luna decided right in the middle of the road that he was going to do a U turn and test his destiny (and mine as well, approaching him @ 70 kmph and seeing him start his turn with a half-walk from abt 25-30 feet.) This is how it went, half-way thru the turn , his wheels @ a 90 degree angle to the road, he saw me, his feet on the ground and he FROZE. Distance abt 25 feet, he STARED into my eyes, through his GLASSES, seeing his entire of abt 40 to 45 years pass by and just stood there !!!!!! I hit the brakes , actually I stood on the right brake halfway thru my braking, abt 8-9 ft from him, turned the bike to get sideways impact and not to hit him head on, making me more susceptible to injury .. :( ..The bike skidded and I still have it in slow motion in my mind and then slowly , the rear wheel portion of my baby, almost like a kiss touched his Luna. The end effect was that the guy took a moment to realise that nothing happened, then lost control and involuntarily lost balance trying to remove his right leg from the other side of the Luna..and well the Luna followed his attraction to gravity. All thru my life when I had my Check baby, she had never had front brakes !!!!, No horn either ...and of course no full head-light , only the dim parking light. Needless to say No Battery ! This reminds me of another night trip @ 11 pm on one dark night ..a fight , the roads between 2 small towns with a distance of abt 15-16 kms , and a fast ride on these roads without lights ...but thats another story altogether. And contrary to what people said, she could get fired up on easily with the correct bit of pumping and then a strong shove,..oops kick I mean. Although nobody could ever start her up..not even the mechanic most of the times. Well as they say, its about knowing the correct way of getting her fired up. :) And needless to say this baby had the least of maintenance costs. Take here anywhere ..if anything gets broken, there is nothing to worry. Her machinery is so simplistic that most half-baked mechanics will fix her right. An ah yes the question that is always lingering in the mind.. the mileage . Well even after pretty rough usage of the baby she would give me an avg of 31-32 and I always thought that for a 250 cc bike, for a strong confident road-gripping ride, this was a damn good job. Somewhere along all this I had sent a mail to the Java(original name of the Czech baby)/Yezdi guys at Bangalore about how they needed to make a few minor changes in the looks of the bike and how this gould really get them to soup up their sales of the bike. Well they did get back, but not much of action from their end ... :( My vote is and will always be with this babe. She and me and spent some of the best times in lfe together and I would recomment her to anyone whoz interested. Though me and her have parted ways for some time and I now have a Japanese babe (my RX 100) with me, I can tell you that there are some areas (like the confidence on the road grip) where even my RX 100 cannot fulfill me... Needless to say there are nights where I miss her...
