::Yercaud is probably one of the few hillstations in India, which has retained its serenity and natural beauty. Considered a poor country cousin of Ooty and Kodaikanal in Tamilnadu, Yercaud enthrals tourists with its simplicity.
::We drove down from Coimbatore to Yercaud(about 190 Kms) last Friday afternoon. For passionate highway driving enthusiast like me, the weather and the roads were perfect.
::Yercaud is about 27 Kms from the nearest town, Salem. Salem was warm and pleasant, but as we started the uphill drive, we could feel the change in temperature. It was evening and it started to get really cold. There are 20 hairpin bends and the journey was a visual treat. The town of Salem was shimmering like a million stars.
::We reached Yercaud at about 8 in the evening and were surprised to find the town fast asleep. Yercaud town is all of 2-3 roads with small shops. People are simple, unassuming and very friendly.
::Our Saturday began with a visit to the Shevaroyan Temple. Situated on the Shevaroyan hills, this temple of Lord Shevarayan and Goddess Kaveri has river Kaveri flowing by it, inside the temple. The temple is quaint and simple.
::Next, was a visit to Killiyur falls. This place is absolutely mind blowing. The valley, the scenic beauty and the sheer height of the water fall is spell binding. The place is calm, peaceful and not at all crowded.
::Montfort school is another must see. Situated in a sprawling campus, this school is perfect for a picture postcard. Nagesh Kukunoor?s ?Rockford? is believed to be inspired and shot here.
::Other places to visit include: Bear?s cave; Lady?s Seat/Gents Seat, Pagoda Point and the Lake.
