Fun film. Review on Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai

Director Hansal Mehta is all out to prove his versatility. First was a remorse dark film Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar then a cop flick Chhal and third time around it is a youthful comedy Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai. Based on the Hollywood film American Pie, this one is Indianised to the core.

Four college guys (also virgins) are desperate to experience life. While at the outset for them sex is the most important thing in life they gradually move on to find their own niche. Rahul who has a girl friend has been trying to make his moves on her. And there are a series of funny theatre scenes. Each time he takes his girl friend to watch Titanic and tries to make his moves. Then there is Bunty whose father is a sexologist and has a sufficient supply of porn videos and playboy magazines to his disposal. Johnny falls for his teacher at college and realises that true love is much more than lust. And finally the stud of the college Ranjit is loved by a sweet, simple girl but has her eyes set on a vampish woman. There is nothing much to the story except for some comic scenes and funny punches which are periodically interspersed with songs from the exceptionally talented trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.

The lyrics by Javed Akhtar are a little too mature for the kind of script. Although the entire cast is new, the performances by all of them are quite good. Probably thanks to the training they went through before the film. Out of the girls, Anu as the simple girl leaves quite an impression and among the guys Rahul played by Aamir Ali is quite a treat to watch. It is refreshing to watch a film which requires no brains and which isn’t a David Dhawan comedy.
