Review : Plastic expressions, painted pancake laden faces, nonexistent plots, deadpan emoting, over the top performances, scheming saas, subjugated bahus, men with unbelievably high libido, precocious kids, sets supposed to be homes which would ideally give the Maharaj of jodhpur to hide his face in shame......welcome to the great Indian Television Tamasha.
In between all this stench enter a gush of fresh air: YMLH. YMLH is a refreshing change from all the above mentioned crap. It traces the story of Pooja(shama sikandar) a middle class gujrati gal on her journey to fulfill her aspirations. She is assisted by her friend and confidante Mandeep, a cherubic punju kudi who loves food and her pal ''pooji''.
There are a few other characters like the venom-spewing Annie and muscle flexing Kushan( enter the super hamsters) but we excuse them cos what is a serial without some drama; Ronit and Reema kids of some typhoon and an ageing cine star, and a do-gooder CR Akash complete the St. Martins college circuit. What strikes you the most is the typical essence of gujratis which has been captured so effectively. One can't help but wonder if Shama Sikandar is a Gujju herself cos she has transformed herself into a gujju with apparent ease.
Kudos to Tanaaz Currim sans her curly locks and all who plays the scheming 'bua' who is a typical rich, uneducated crass gujju lady with aplomb. She is a delight to watch and the background score goes 'mirchi' each time she appears on screen with an evil trick or two up her sleeve. Though my pet peeve is the fact that they keep mentioning that Ghatkopar and other suburbs are downmarket areas whereas some other areas around town are upmarket.
These kind of irresponsible depictions only aggravate the mental divide between people and should be henceforth refrained from. All in all a must watch if you are looking for some light fare.
