The Keys to Writing A Super Review!!
Jun 30, 2003 08:29 PM 1949 Views
(Updated Jun 30, 2003 11:20 PM)

I love to write!  English was my absolute favorite subject in school!  My best friend in elementary school was the state Spelling Bee Champion!  I read a novel a week!  I always have a pen and note pad available to me.in my car, in my purse, by my nightstand!

All of these things that I mention are extremely instrumental in writing, and in this particular case, writing of reviews on Mouthshut.

At some point, my decision to write was an easy one for me.  In school, I discovered that if I could string together a few words, (nouns, adjectives, verbs) and use the correct gramma, (periods, colons, exclamation points), others could learn something from what I wrote!

This was an immense feeling of accomplishment for me, as a new writer.  In fact, my very first short story was published in the high school Creative Writing Journal.  So, how does all of this background information help you to write super reviews on MouthShut?

Be passionate about what you are writing about:  This is, by far, the best way to write a stupendous review!  I find that having knowledge and experience with a product, an airline, a medication, a book, or a movie, comes shining through the review!  Conversely, reviews where the product is unfamiliar to the writer are so lacking in description and personal experience, that the reader can tell by the lack of passion and excitement!

Of course, this is only my opinion, but I suggest to test out my little theory by reading a few reviews by your favorite writers then check out some unfamiliar reviewers' writings.  Analyse what makes your favorite reviewers' articles better and what makes the reviewer WOT worthy!

Grammar, Punctuation, Paragraphing, Sentence Structure:  When reading a Tom Clancy novel, or a Harriet Beecher Stowe book, or perhaps William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliette, how many times do you see misspelled words, or run-on sentences, or no periods at the ends of sentences?  I will bet that your answer is either rarely or never!

This is because the writers have extensive knowledge of proper grammar and important writing tools available to them.  They use dictionaries, thesauruses, encyclopedias to make certain that their book or story is as grammatically correct as possible.

As MouthShut reviewers of products and services, we should follow the same rules of excellence when writing!  My suggestion if you are not the best writer, yet have an earnest desire to help others in this site, is to write in Microsoft Word, where the corrections are automatic and the above referenced resources are built into the MS Word software, or have a friend to edit and correct for you prior to hitting the submit button.

Know your Subject Matter: Whenever I consider writing a product review or helpful essay, I first consider my knowledge base.  How much do I really know about the book, movie, Compact Disc, restaurant or airline that I plan to write about?

I may know a little bit, but not have specific facts.  What I do, is research the company, author, movie director, or store, whatever the case may be, and incorporate as much useful information as I can into my review.  Thus, making a

much more consumer helpful review!  After all, isn't that our purpose here?

Add Some Personality to Your Reviews:  As a writer, I strive to allow my readers to get to know me.  What better opportunity to do this than through my reviews and essays!  By adding bits and pieces of myself to my reviews, others writers on this site, as well as the consumers researching certain products who come across mine, will see the humanity in my stuff that I write.

Sometimes I come across as satirical, or empathetic, or humorous, or sad.whatever the emotion I am feeling at the time of my writing, always shines through to my readers. This helps to develop a rapport with those who may be in search of helpful and honest advice and will remember that this author sounded truthful and genuine.

Write your Reviews as if You were the One Researching a Product:  In other words, if you were looking up information on the purchase of a new BMW automobile, wouldn't you want to know as many specific details as possible written by someone who has actual knowledge and personal experience with the specific make and model?  I know that I would.

Therefore, please tell me about the gear shift, or the engine, how about the air conditioning unit, price paid for the auto.  What, if any, major mechanical problems did you have?  Were there any recalls or serious issues that I need to know about? Did the brakes fail or was there any strange or annoying noises?

If you, the reviewer only write about superficial information like the color of the auto, or the speed that you reached while dragging with friends, I do not believe that I would find your review very helpful at all.  I would, in fact, keep searching until I came across a review that was indeed very helpful as a consumer!

Have Willingness to Make Corrections:  When writing this review, I had to edit four or five times due to a misspelled word or two.  Perhaps they were typographical errors but, for this writer, the corrections were necessary.  So, it took a little bit of effort to go back to make the necessary changes.  It is well worth it in the end!

There are many prolific writers on this site.  You may be one of them!  You can strive to become one!  Digging deeply inside of ourselves, striving to produce top quality consumer friendly reviews and offering personal experience on products and services are what makes writing a super review so rewarding!

I hope this helps.
