Tips for Effective Writing!
Aug 04, 2001 03:04 PM 10568 Views

How to write a review? Now that’s another good topic to write on. I am no Shakespeare  to actually tell anyone how to write.but here are a few points according to me should one keep in mind while writing reviews. Of course, not all points can ever be implemented, but I do try to incorporate as many as I can. There goes:

Know what are u writing on

Sounds strange? But yeah, I think one should make sure as to what is he/she is going to write on. Mistakes can happen once or twice, but deliberately doing it is something not appreciable  writing on. I had once the pleasure of reading a backstreet boys concert description under their album name….or who’s hot and who’s not on mouthshut under the website name! Disclaimers are a easy way to escape. A suggestion would be to contact the usually very helpful Aarti or Faisal to add the section if its not there and then write the review.

Write what you feel, and not what your friends felt.

The review should contain instances from personal experience with the product and not  the experiences of your friends. So many times I have come across statements such as ‘my friend has been using it from.’, ‘my friend had this nasty.’ And so on. People( at least me!) would like reading about ones experience with product. Also, give a conclusive decision as to whether u liked the product, or disliked the product, or you think the product can be better. Don’t leave that decision to the readers!

Write economically

Reviews should not be elongated un-necessarily. The same points should not be repeated often in a review. Reviews should be economical in length…and should convey the message. Even if hundred words convey what you want to say…stop! Don’t write further, by elongating the review and making it boring.

Leave out un-necessary details

Leave out details which sound obvious and are obvious. For example don’t explain how to register for a particular website to members.coz, if a member is reading your review here.he would have logged in…and would know the procedure of registering! While explaining about products…don’t write that ‘the bottle comes green in color.with white letters’, ‘.they use red color as a background for the website’ and so on.

Write on product, please!

No! I am not interested in knowing who created the FORD cars.I am more interested in knowing how the car works and how you felt by it. Keep in mind that every company tries hard to obtain a market share however crap their product is, by whichever means they can! So friends, writing more about the product makes more sense than writing about creators of the product.

If possible.be humorous

Where-ever possible, try to incorporate humor into your review.a humorous review stays on ones mind for long. I still remember the humorous by jasbirdyn on a tooth paste.I still go and read the same review again! Not everyone can add humor to their reviews.but they should try. It makes reviews interesting!

Be simple, be effective

Keep reviews simple and straight and devoid of any high language words. The most effective  reviews are the ones written in simple style, and good language. Don’t use foul language, and also, make your review coherent. Structure it properly. The best examples of such reviews are the ones written by jilmil or abbey.they are simple and elegant.

Lastly, if you DON’T know about the product… DON’T write to gather points! And if one cannot write.then DON’T blatantly copy reviews from other sources, magazines, or websites.

Well, these are some of the points which I believe one should take into consideration when writing a review.of course they are strictly my opinions.and I am sure we will again have a ball on this  topic too!

Keep writing!
