The Ten Commandments of Review Writing
Feb 24, 2003 11:23 PM 1349 Views
(Updated Feb 24, 2003 11:23 PM)

Not long before, I thought commenting, advicing or reviewing about any product was an easy deal. But mouthshut.com has changed my dimension of thinking, and now I have realised that review writing beckons your skill and charecter in a good blend.Though I started a bit wary, every review I read, every comment I received taught me long lessons on review writing. Now I consider myself wise enough to pass on the experiences, I have gathered from this noble place.

Friends, here goes my review titled TEN COMMANDMENTS OF EFFECTIVE REVIEWING

1.BEAT THE BIAS BLUES

The most important parameter in reviewing is avoiding bias.Though the unbiased reviews invoke less readership, they would go highly to reflect your charecter. It is better that you reconsider your every review, and try to be a little less harsh, or a little less exxagerative.

2.LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP

Once you have decided to write a review or add your advices, do look at other reviews on the same product. This would definetely provide you with new aspects about product and also avoid repetition of a particular aspect. And you would do better, if you read the comments as well. After this you would be better prepared to write a review, both in terms of confidence and content.

3.BETTER KILL THAN KISS

One of the most discussed points in review writing is the length of the review. While nobody would like to confine expressions, it is imperative to ensure that your review is not too short or too long. But personally, I would feel it is better to KILL(Keep it Long, but loveable) rather than KISS(Keep it Short and Simple)

4.PARAPHRISING IS PARAMOUNT

The length of any review can be hid by using the paragraphs perfectly.Apart from just making the reviews simpler, the paragraphs are highly helpful in categorisation of thoughts, and also aspects of the product.Whatever may be the length of a review, do make it a point to have a minimum of three paragraphs in a review.

5.SYNTAXES ARE SECONDARY

At mouthshut, we are all good at English and use our ability to pen good reviews. We would all love to scatter here and there a few words, idioms and phrases that we are accustomed to, which would generally add on to the value of the essay. But an overdose of the grammatic usage of language(long sentences, too many unfamiliar words, closely spaced idioms and phrases, too many adjectives etc) would create a negative impact.Syntaxes should aid the review and not fade the thought. And the review is for both Shakespeares and Suppandis.

6.QUESTIONS WILL HELP YOUR QUEST

Though we all tend to be more of a critic than like a fan, no one would appreciate a hardcore critic.Negative reviews are read less than the positive ones. But you can add a positive touch to your hard hitting reviews by asking a question rather than making a declaration. For example, 'Would this movie make it to international standards?' is better than'This movie will never make it to the international standards'

7.TILTING FAVOUR WITH TITLES

The most important part of your review would be your title. The title should be binding with the essay. It should be formal for the formal reviews, and a cool one would nail it off fo casual opinions. In any case, the title should be highly attractive. You may take enough time for getting the wonderful title, which would require your creativity, but all the same provide enormous attention.

8.INCULCATE INNOVATION

Try out a new way of putting your thoughts into writing. We normally go through the review in a systematic manner by describing the product, analysing the strengths and weaknesses, and by providing our justified verdict. We also rush through the product based on our experiences.A new approach to the review(Like ABC of Cricket.Writing a review like a letter) could be tried.Inculcating such innovations would help us battle boredom in our reviews.

9.COPYING RIGHT AND CONSCIOUSNESS

Though, I havent come across anyone cut, copying and paste a review, I have heard that these unruly things happen at mouthshut.com.I consider it a great sin to label another person's thoughts as yours. There may be occasions where you would be too tempted to include a phrase, one sentence or one paragraph itself. You can do them all with a mention of the original author's name. You should remember that consciousness and charecter are more important than cognizance and charm in your reviews.

10.IT DOESNT STOP WITH WRITING

Only high recommendations and opinions by people would make an ordinary essay an extra ordinary one.So you must see that the process of people reading your essays should compliment your writing them. You may send a message to those who have already expressed their opinions on a particular product, people in your trust lists, or email your friends interested in the particular topic. You should know the importance attached to advertising these days.

I have putforth my views and I expect you to cross swords with me.I hope these commandments would be useful in helping you come with better reviews and make this place as happening and honurable, as ever
