Please beware that what I am going to write are my views alone. Maybe they are not correct and everyone might not agree with them, but this is how I like to read my reviews.
I have been active on MS for about a month now and have been reading a lot of reviews and writings. The community here is very active and produces a lot of excellent material for reading. But what I feel is that MS is more of a social place rather than a review site.
Please mind that I am not criticizing MS in any way. I love MS for it has shown me the joys of writing. It is just that the reviews(by the popular writers generally) are not reviews I would want to read if I want information or advice regarding any product or service. I still love reading those pieces because they excellent pieces of writings and I can read a lot from them as to how to improve my writing style.
OK now I will say as to what I want when I write a review.
1.It needs to have a lot of information about the subject.
2.It needs to be unbiased, ie without any passion and should reveal the truth.
3.It should give an account of the experience of the product.
4.It should be concise, and should not contain any distracting material which diverts away from the main subject.
5.It should be understandable by all.
One should realize that the main purpose of a review is to provide the reader an insight about the product, it should allow him to decide weather to invest in it or not. It is not a essay writing competition. But at MS the beauty of the site are its reviews in its present form. I read and will continue to read it for fun rather than for solid information.
There are a lot of reviews which do contain solid info, but get obscured in the other more popular reviews. What happens is that a review by a popular writer invariably receives a lot more hits than those of relatively lesser known writers, even if they contain more information. If I browse a category I will see only those reviews on top rather than the ones I need.
I understand that the tips that I have given will not allow a review to be successful on MS. By successful I mean that there might not be a lot of activity on those reviews, but they will serve the purpose of the review.
Again I wish to point out that I have merely written down my views and I DO NOT point at anyone.
