Story:

The title might mislead you into thinking that Worth Winning is a self-help book. It is, in fact, a rollicking story about one man's search for his ideal mate.

Written way back in 1985, the book is set in Washington DC. The hero, Taylor Worth, is a well-to-do, good-looking 30-something computer programmer. He is actively courted and pursued by women, but can't seem to find that ideal girl. Thanks largely to his tendency to be hypercritical of women, and overanalytical of all relationships.

After one particularly lonely thanksgiving, spent without a date, Taylor and his best buddy Ned make a bet. Ned suggests that Taylor is alone because no woman will have him. Taylor is outraged and hence the bet: He will have to woo three women simultaneously and get them to say ''yes'' to his marriage proposal.

Enter the three women: The breathtakingly gorgeous but near-frigid Erin; the sex starved, security-loving housewife and mother, Eleanor; and the rabidly anti marriage feminist, Veronica. As we can see, Taylor has his task cut out.

The wooing of the three women makes for interesting reading. There are plenty of laughs along the way. Does Taylor get his girl, and if so, which one? And for those of us who are revolted at the thought of so much deception, Taylor does get his just desserts. There are some great one-liners, some raunchy sex and some very interesting ruminations by Taylor on life, man-woman relationships, feminism, careers and love.

This in fact, is a book that has something for everyone. Plenty of action for those who prefer light reading. And some thought-provoking ideas on a variety of subjects, for those who like such things. As for the author, Dan Lewandowski, I know nothing about him, but he deserves to be a lot more famous than he is. SERIOUS READERS, THIS BOOK WILL SURPRISE YOU WITH ITS DEPTH. Best of all, Worth Winning is one of those books you can finish in one sitting!
