About a year ago, the buzz about Worldspace started at home, esp since my Granparents were into Carnatic music and had heard from others and read that the Worldspace offers some good carnatic music and has a channel exclusively for that.. So my mom and uncle marched into the Spencers electronics store in Spencers Plaza and purchased a BPL Worldspace receiver and went across the street to Philips to buy the Speakers.. In all it costed about Rs4000/- . Oh and this does not incl their yearly subscription fee of Rs 1200/- which has now risen to Rs1800/-
It was interesting to note that less than 2days after purchasing the unit, the guys came home and very professionally installed the External antenae and the unit in my Granparents bedroom and had set the whole thing up.. Infact the service executive also gave me a mini lesson on how to tune the channels,save them and etc.. This was quite informative as I have been able to handle the unit to search for channels on my own..
Anyways, we began using it and couple of months down the road, one day when we turned it on, it wouldnt work.. Power was there in the speakers but not in the unit. Thus began the dreadful journey of getting in touch with their customer support agents and getting them to come home and check it out.. Since this was our first time , we dint realise that the adapter had blown a fuse and needed to be replaced.. so, the guy came home in 3-5days time and replaced it..This is the only area they are weak in- Customer support and promptness of service... But this was just the beginning of many more troubles.. Oh,yes, I think by now we have replaced the adapter and once the receiver had to be replaced.. I wonder why this happens.. Is there something wrong with the power circuit at home or is the receiver and adapter so sensitive that it conks off ...
Outside of all these hassles, I must say we are very happy , primarily because the music they play(the Channel that plays all day at home is Shruti, the carnatic music channel) is beautiful and my grandparents are extremely happy.. Plus the unit is so user friendly that they can operate it on their own and it also has a remote.. So you can be anywhere in the room and just turn it on or off.. Infact it plays from mid morning to 11pm and then switched off..
You can preset upto 10channels and there are more than 100 available for you to choose from.. Be it music of varied genre, language or news channels, or philosphical channels, it has it all and every customer is a satisfied happy customer cos they get to listen to whatever they desire at any time of the day.. it never stops....
The remote is very user friendly and also has a light button which when clicked on, the lighton the worldspace receiver screen turns on so you can see what the channel that is playing is..
And when it is time for your subscription to expire, they send you a mail with the password and also give you a run through on how to change the password..
Although after facing these adapter related issues, we are now a bit more careful and switch it off in case the power has gone and Invertor is on at home.. Dont want to risk it...
now, if you are looking to buy a Worldspace unit, I suggest you go ahead and get one for your house.. Just make sure not to tamper too much with the system... Oh,and another fascinating thing about this is that you get an Internal antanae along wiht the unit that can be used incase you are going for a picnic or going away on a holiday and want to carry your worldspace unit with you.. just place it wher there is signal and you have music playing all the time wherever you go...
