When I saw the promos for this show, I thought it was yet another 'friends' serial, which in fact it is but Will & Grace is about a totally 'different' set of friends, it has a charm of its own; no wonder I am now hooked to this serial, a must watch for me every Monday at 10.30 pm on Zee English.
At a brunch 'session' a concerned mom is discussing her daughter's Grace's future, also present is Mr. Will Truman....
Mom: I wish Grace would find a man & settle down in life [lotsa blah blah]
Will: What? even I wouldn't marry Grace !
Grace: Why wouldn't ''you'' marry me?
needless to say, the whole episode then deals with Grace trying to get an answer from Will as to why he wouldn't marry her! The man who isn't in favour of anyone marrying her is Grace Adler's best friend & her roommate & also a gay. Now if a gay thinks she isn't good enough to be married to, can you imagine how our heroine Grace would be? Nope don't you jump to conclusions coz Grace isn't even half as bad as Will makes her out to be!
Grace Adler : Will she, won't she?
a beautiful, sweet sometimes too sweet, yet confident self-employed interior decorator but her personal life ain't too hunky dory. Her shoulder to cry on , advisor & confidante in this personal mess is her best friend Will Truman, whom she knows since her college years. They actually began with dating each other before Will had a 'realisation' about himself.......came out of the closet.......he preferred men to Grace! However, friendship seemed to be destined for the two as they have been inseparable since their 'breakup'. As she is not yet ready to live on her own & as she needs Will to advise her on each n every thing the best way seems to be living with him, so Grace now shares an apartment with
Will, her best & only buddy . Grace is usually attracted to the wrong kinda guyz [i guess Will was the best example] & it is at such times that she is advised by Will to 'think with her head', that she doesn't heed to this advise is another story.
Will Truman : Where there is a Will, there is no way
a successful lawyer - intelligent, charming, making lots of money & has recently been dumped by his long-term boyfriend Michael. Will is looking for love but is often dateless, he usually pretends wanting to be away from Grace & dating some guys but the truth is that Will would rather spend his evenings with Grace, watching tv or playing charades or shopping. Besides Grace, his other best friend is Jack
Jack McFarland : Jack & Will go up the hill !
befitting his name is jack of all trades coz he can do anything but the being the lazy person that he is, Jack does nothing. His ambition is to be a performer or host a talk show, in fact he has also done a show called ''Just Jack'' & cannot stop talking about it. Basically, Jack is a dimwit who gives the impression of being a outspoken neurotic guy but is just a normal guy with a straightforward attitude & he cares a lot for his friend Will. A self-claimed expert on dating & men [''Will, you've had one common problem in all your relationships. You''], Jack is forever trying to find good dates for Will & when necessary he doesn't hesitate to make himself comfortable at Will's office [many times trying to pass of as a lawyer!] An Effeminate gay, Jack has all the mannerisms & over the top characteristics that are usually associated with gays [though these are absent in Will]. He loves talking about his pets : parrot Guapo, dog Klaus Von Puppy, discussing fashion, loves to be the centre of attraction, his fav sport is ice skating ballet, he also loves to gossip & point people's faults, its no surprise then that Jack gets along with Karen......
Karen Walker : Shu-Shu Fontana
is the dahling of this show ! She is everything one would not wish for in their assistants but at the same time she is the funniest character in this show, definitely charming without trying too hard to please. Just like Jack she too likes to tease & poke jokes at people [Grace & Will being the regular victims here]. Karen is a rich socialite married to Stan (whom we never see) & even though she is supposed to be Grace’s assistant, Karen hardly does any work, spending most of her time shopping, lunches, drinking martinis. As a result Grace does all the hard work while Karen sits & watches her doing nothing. The only reason Karen even bothers to turn up at work is that she loves to complicate Grace's work life & tell her how to live her life.
Although she is wrong most of the times, Karen does what she does with such confidence that one cannot help but be charmed by her naiveness. Her best friend is Jack which whom she shares all her gossips as both find it impossible to keep quiet if they know a secret & they also have this cute 'clap of hands' things like little kids do. So supporting she is that Karen also accompanies Jack to a gay fest, as his date & her drag queen name is ''Shu-Shu Fontana'', naturally at the fest she is adored by all the other drag queens & for once, Jack is sidelined. Karen lives in her own fancy world where she believes that all men find her irresistible but secretly she fancies Jack [oh so sad ! he is a gay].
