We have always heard of Black Magic, but White Magic caught my fancy and when it happened to be a washing machine, then it irked the inquisitiveness in me and wanted to own one soon. This Diwali, we decided that it was time to bid-good-bye to our old trustworthy, honest, hardworking semi-automatic washing machine. The reason being that it was getting old and probably may one day give up. It was absolutely in working condition and it was Whirlpool- earlier known as TVS Whirlpool.

However, for me it began as Black Magic and ended up later as White Magic! Surprised, right? Here goes the story:

The parting was sad, but the arrival of someone new brings back the smile on the face. Well, that was not to last long. The machine arrived promptly the next day and in few hours the service engineer was at the door step. So here begins the magic, I said to myself. The service engineer installed the machine and as the water inlet was being connected, he realized it was faulty. But u could still fix it and use the machine, the only hitch being an equal amount of water also goes outside as the inlet pipe was faulty. But, for me that was enough to lose faith in Whirlpool. I was furious and the service engineer assured me that the same would be replaced immediately the next day. But that day took very long. And I continued to use the machine. That was a very difficult task too, as I had to see to it that water was also not wasted. So I had to place buckets below the inlet pipe so that water could be saved. Well. I thought of my poor little semi-automatic and desperately wanted it back, but that was a dream now.

Days passed into more days and there was no sign of the replacement. I called the service centre a number of time and a sweet voice would assure me that it’s on its way (which way?). Finally I browsed the website of Whirlpool and wrote out a piece of my mind. I was determined that the product leaves my home as it was wasting space and I did not want to use it with a faulty inlet pipe. Now things started moving.

After, again, a few days I got a call from the Mumbai office and the person told me he’s looking into it and to give him two more days! So finally an engineer comes and he looks into the situation and says that the concerned replacement is in short supply and will take a few days (sic). Again day’s passes into days and finally the replacement part arrives. Then I get a call from Delhi head office asking me whether the problem was solved and they sincerely apologized for the inconvenience. Then I get another call from the Faridabad plant asking where the problem actually occurred (they wanted to ascertain whether the material supplier supplied a faulty one). Then the Mumbai office calls asking whether I was happy with the performance of the machine. Again after a few days, I get another call from Delhi to know if the machine is working fine. Well, yes it is.

I just couldn’t believe it. The service was too professional. And it reassures the faith in the company. Keep it up Whirlpool. Hope everyone gets the same approach. But reading mouthshut.com, I was a bit taken aback and thought whether I took the wrong decision in buying a Whirlpool F65.

The F65 is a sturdy and strong machine. It looks a bit bulky, but then it’s stubborn on dirt and removes them effectively. I am not happy with the owner’s manual, it could have been more effectively written especially the wash cycle. But the Agi-Soak is incredible; it soaks clothes for almost 30 minutes with a 5 minute interval scrub and then begins the wash cycle. However, if you soak clothes prior to putting them in to the machine, like we do, then there is no option to skip this step. The clothes get a tough and gentle wash, I must say. So with an automatic you can do other chores and leave the washing, rinsing and spin drying to the machine, unlike a semi-automatic. And yes, the engineer who comes to install is also a smart and caring sales man too! I got the Trolley (it’s helpful if you have to keep the machine away from the bathroom) and the sleek protective cover. Diwali for me was great. I got White Magic washing for the laundry, a diamond pendant (worth Rs. 2300/-- that’s what they say) and a holiday package worth Rs. 4300/- (unfortunately that coupon is yet to arrive) and days have passed into months. So, the next letter on their website will be for that holiday coupon!
