This is the company which has the worst HR policies, I have come across, I have worked in 5 different organizations. Here even though one would serve for 5-10 years in this org, even though he is very talented and hard working, if a manager wants to get him out of the way for his own reasons, he can do so simply , by keeping him in PIP, and then tell him to leave saying performance is bad.
All the benifits mentioned in below comments are right, given your manager is your good buddy and doesnt have a ego clash/etc with you, if not he will just through you out, and even the HR is a spectator, the employee will be made to suffer a lot in the PIP, and after that he is complemented with pink slip, it has happened already with two employees as far I know, who has worked for 1.8 and 2.5 years, i.e from the starting of the company which is in 2007.
IT does not take 2.5 years to know the performance of the employee. it is funny some times to talk about it. that to with out a notice period or proper salary compensation.
