Body Mass Index And The 95th Percentile

What is this damn Body Mass Index(BMI)?

Just as Sensex serving as the benchmark for the trading fraternity, BMI is an index serving as the benchmark for the obese fraternity. This is calculated as follows:

1) Note your height

2) Note your weight

3) Calculate Body Mass Index by using the formula found by googling.

What does that stupid 95th Percentile in the title mean?

There are people who pass their time by conducting surveys on obese people and have made good amount of data available. Your dietician usually has this data(received as compliments from medical representatives) and are sorted country-wise. Though BMI is not exactly a relative score like CGPA, dieticians believe that geographical benchmarking gives a clearer picture of their customer. After calculating your BMI, your dietician usually checks if your score falls in the top 5 percent of your country(example:India). If you do fall, your dietician would be the happiest person in the world. Once you are lucky enough to be in the top 5 percent, you are likely to get a seat in hell in the near future, similar to a seat in IIMs if you are among the top 2 percent. If you fall in between 85 – 95 percentile(inclusive), you are in the waiting list(not similar to IIMs though)

Can you throw some light on Obesity? Historically, obesity has been regarded as a symbol of elegancy, wealth and social status, for it was believed(or forced to believe) that only obese people ate well, ate good food, only obese women had the capacity to bear more children(with obese men contributing their bit), and only obese people had the potential to survive famine.(Me too believed the same and was drawing pleasures at my ‘elegancy’ until the fairer-sex started giving the you-look-disgusting looks at me)

If you feel the below feelings, then you are certainly obese.

1.** You envy Adnan Sami and feel like undergoing a similar make-over like him

2. When a fairer-sex is around you, you inhale more and exhale less to give your tummy a compressed look

3. Whenever you are before a mirror, you spend more time looking at your waist area(front, back and sides) than anything else

4. You feel very happy when your overweight friend expresses his overweight problems

5. You don’t have the stamina to spend long hours in office and tend to have more tea/coffee to refreshen yourself

6. You say you don’t like procrastinating, but you do that everyday and crib about colleagues not sharing your work

7. Each day after you get up, you say to yourselves “Damn, I wish today were a holiday!”

8. You control food intake during weekdays but shamelessly indemnify the shortages during weekends

9. You pay the gym fee, discontinue it after 8 days, and say “no time yaar, too much work”

10. You feel like slapping all those who call you obese

Can you give some good tips on how to reduce obesity, stay fit and look decent?

You should stop reading articles on obesity with immediate effect, and start implementing the tips which you have already read somewhere else:-)
