Movies like these have a unforgivable peril – to dive from realistic to fantasy with just one, random, frame which does not stand true to the collective logic of movie goers – and thankfully
‘A Wednesday’ does not stumble anywhere in that respect. What we have is a gritty, realistic, and at times horrifying script which is ably supported by the stellar performances by some of the finest actors in Indian film cinema in their maybe their career best roles.
So, we have the ‘Common Man’ – that’s correct, that’s the name of the guy – taking the whole town hostage with just one phone call. I know, this reminds you of ‘Domblivli Fast’, but the difference between ‘A Wednesday’ and ‘Domibivli Fast’ ends there.
And we have a gym going, fit and flab free police force being sent to a goose chase. Surprisingly, the movie has the government officials in a ambiguous light, they aren’t shown as either completely corrupt or completely patriotic, they are shown as average men burdened with the complex and moral-crippling questions they call their career, or for clarification, their political career.
The script is something that you might find in a Frederick Forsyth novel. Think about it, give this movie a hundred odd pages of how that guy acquired the RDX and stuff and what stops it from being a novel? – Nothing. And then the stellarnperformances. The irony of the entire starcast is – two guys in the evening of
their careers doing what an actor would do when they don’t worry about ticket sales any longer, and an entire supporting cast of people who want to be known for doing different cinema – You got a winner right there.
Whoever has selected the starcast has done an excellent job. I dread to think what a commercial producer would have done to this movie. Like for instance, replace Anupam Kher with Amitabh Bachchan, replace Jimmy Shergill with Sanjay Dutt and maybe replace the other character with Tusshar Kapoor.. hey wait.. Ekta Kapoor may get ideas, and yea, Deepal Shaw would have an item number, right at the runaway!
