Out of this world photos. Review on Webshots

This is one of the fantabulest (I made that up myself...to mean...you know what!) sites for fantabulous photos. When I saw the reviews that had been written about this site/software, I was wondering if there was anything I could write that wasn't already written...but then I looked again...just 5 reviews for something as neat as webshots?? So...here's one more!!

Before I even fell for this software and its features, I visited the site, and saw the quality of photos there. I, then, immediately downloaded this software (for here is where the catch lies...without the Webshots software, you cannot download/view the otherwise full screen images.

The Software:

The software helps you maintain all the images. Once you download the software and install it, all you need do is visit the site, and click on any photo you like. The photo is then immediately downloaded to your system, and placed neatly within a category in the Webshots software. In this manner, all you gotta do is click away at the deadly pics...and there's plenty!!

This is not all that the software does. You can change your wallpaper from within the interface itself, and even set it so that it changes automatically at a regular period of time. You can also set it as your screensaver, wherein it scrolls through all your selected images.

Within the software you can create your own folders to organise your images. Mine has silhouettes, sunsets, green fields, mountains, flowers, wild animals as my folders (so now you know the kind of photos you get!)

The Site:

You need to create a username and supply a password (ofcourse!). One little bit of a hassle...but then haven't we got used to usernames and passwords by now?? However, it does not ask for your grandfather's name and your pet's favourite hobby etc (if you know what I mean!).

What I do, and I recommend you do, is go through the 'Daily Archives' of pictures. Starting from January 1999 I have gone through right upto March 2000, and selected about 250 pictures (out of 910+) that I have flipped for (every day Webshots features two pictures as Pics of the Day which you can download). Then I have organized these pics in appropriate folders from within the software. Each folder is saved and is called a collection. When you browse through to the Webshots/Collections folder, you will see several '.wbz' files. These can be copied onto a cd for backup, and can be installed in another machine that has webshots too!! I do that when I take these photos to my home PC from my office!!

Ah...the catch is that since each page comprises of plenty of pics, it takes time loading. However, when out of 20 pics, I see some that I like, instead of clicking on one (which opens a new page in the same window with only that image, which you got to click on again to download), downloading it, then coming back to the main page (containing the 20 images) by pressing the BACK button, I prefer to right click and open it in a new window, so that I dont have to press the BACK button to come back to the window with the 20 pics!! I just right click and open each image in a new window and download it from there.

Currently I am going through 2001, and am upto September 2001, and the photos keep getting better!!!

Someone mentioned that there are about 4 million images. I would be happy to have about 500-1000 images that really make me feel....'WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD'!!!!
