Background

: Religion is faith, Rituals come and go but religion stays. Before reviewing this movie I must clear that the story shown in the movie is part of rituals that were there in society some time ago. This story is about a widow home in a holy city on the banks of Ganga. How they live, survive and finally conquer society evils and their inner fears have been beautifully portrayed by the director. When I saw this movie I didn’t had much expectation as I was not convinced of the plot(Biased mind you see). But this movie changed all that. Every religion is pious but the people who run them can do good and bad. Coming back to movie this is a story of love(John Abraham), struggle(can’t recall the name of that child artist), consciousness(Lisa Ray), revolt(Seema Biswas), greed(Raghuvir Yadav) and I don’t care Indian(Vinay).

This is also the story of what-if-I-was-in-this-situation. Just think of any of the characters and place yourself in his/her shoes and think what you would have done.

Performance: John with his usual smile and Lisa with her usual beauty have done enough justice with their characters. Manorama didn’t have to act for this one too. She is already master of such roles from times immemorial. Seema Biswas is a dependable actress from sometime. Raghuvir Yadav like many others in the list is unsung hero of Indian cinema. But stealing the show is that little ‘chuhiya’. She has shown enough maturity to play this role, which is in-fact very rare for her age.

Other Aspects:Deepa Mehta with this movie is right their in top A league of directors. Hope she keeps on repeating this performance again and again. This movie also helps everybody to think that in order to sustain and survive you have to keep on changing. Somebody has well said that Change is the only thing constant.

Same ways rules followed by the society must change. We should be thankful that we are in a society which keeps rediscovering itself. We are part of great civilization because this is a thinking civilization. Not rigid or plastic but very flexible in nature. Overall a must watch movie because we must learn from the mistakes but in order to learn we must remember the mistakes. Thanks Deepa for again reminding us the evils of our society. Isn’t a critic our best friend?
