My friend recommend this book to me and he told me that he had read this book twice and he has hard copy so I don't have to go somewhere and buy it, he was ready to gave it to me.
This book for history lovers and for those who adore everything.
The story is about the character who caught in the dilemma between duty and self-freedom.He sacrifices his freedom first to follow his duty but after that soon he realized that his heart does not follow the same.
However, even after patiently waiting for so many years and making supposedly successful choice, frustration haunts him till the novel ends.
WAITING is the story of Lin Kong, a doctor who is in the Chinese army, trapped in an arranged and loveless marriage to Shu Yu who lives in a small village, away from the city where he is stationed. Lin, a doctor wants to divorce his wife Shu Yu so that he can marry another lady, Manna Wu, a nurse whom he met in the hospital where he works.
Every summer, Lin travels back to the village where Shu Yu lives with their daughter.
Shu agrees to divorce him, but eventually she withdraws from her word.
Each year they have hearing.After each hearing, Lin is subjected to the derisive taunts of the villagers like men are all alike, beasts, and'Doctors are butchers'etc etc.
Finally, after 18 years, Lin is granted a legal divorce.
Meanwhile, the situation with Manna Wu was changed, and the way the story plays out is not the'happily ever after' result as reader expects.
The novel portrays both, the society's level and at a personal level also, the emptiness and rashness that plagues human beings.
All in all, the book should be read by all, and especially by those who wants to understand the culture and society of an old age that our neighbours seems to have left behind.
Recommended to all who really interested in history or culture.
