I had been to this place called Vrunda's which is located in Chandavarkar Road,Borivli west. They are a big fast food joint and have recently opened a Gujarati traditional food section which opened to packed houses. This section has been open now for the past one year(or I think a bit longer). To begin with, the dining area is located on the 1st floor(a steep flight of steps leading upstairs). Just climbing this steep flight is an uphill task literally esp for elders. My mother had a tough time climbing up. At the top,the door opening into the place is small and narrow and people keep bustling in and out of it. Moving about is not easy here. On entry, you can see waiters dressed in traditional gujju attire. There is no a la carte and they serve only thali. The place is well airconditioned and has pleasing interiors. Cane chairs for furniture etc. If you decide to go on a weekday,it is not so crowded but on weeekends you may have to wait over half an hour to get seating inside. I have been on both weekends as well as weekdays. So much for the pros. Now for the cons. As soon as we were seated, the waiters placed water and the empty thalis. After what seemed like over half an hour of waiting, they started serving us. The food was delicious but each time we demanded a second serving,it was gurdgingly served to us. My father had asked for the jaljeera which was supposed to be complimentary with the thali. It came at the end of our meal(instead of at the start) and this also after several repeated reminders to the staff. When I asked for extra roti, the waiter glared at me,and made some remarks about taking extra helping. Now the place clearly says it is unlimited thali. So it was the duty of the waiter to serve me,whether he liked it or not. For each and every single item,my family and I had to call the waiters several times to draw our attention to the food getting over. Often we had to wait for a long time before being served extra helpings for anything. This has happened on each and every visit to the place. The waiters are very very rude. When my father has asked the waiter for extra dal,the waiter rudely told him he had to wait and he would bring after serving some other people. This happened several times...not just once that we could call it an isolated case. I wish to say all in all though the food is good,I do not want to encourage anyone to go to this place unless they want to be insulted. The staff need lessons in manners and how to deal with customers. After all,the customer is the King. They need to realise this if they want their place to have some repeat value. In pricing it is about average, with weekday thali costing about Rs.80(last when I visited them and this was sometime in Sept/Oct last year) and on weekends it costs about almost Rs.100. Another thing they say no sharing is allowed. My 8 yr old son is not fond of eating outside food. So when he wanted to taste the salad, the waiters rudely pointed out to me that I should buy him a separate thali if he had to eat. I did not want to do this as I had already fed him at home before bringing him to the place,so the question of him eating a full thali over and above his lunch was out of question. But this did not affect the waiter who made rude remarks about him eating out of my plate and insisted I buy him a separate thali(costing over Rs 65). Tell me...is this right?? My son hates outside food...and all he wanted to do was nibble on a piece of tomato from my salad. Even if I had offered him more,he would not have had it. Anyway, this was my experience. I am now based in Singapore and plan to visit India sometime in June. Maybe if time permits,I may visit this place again to see if there has been any change in service(esp as I do love gujju food!) and if I go there again,I will surely post another more updated review of the place. To sum up,all the rudeness from the waiters spoilt whatever appetite I had drummed up to enjoy my meal. By the end of the meal I couldnt wait to get out of the place which was beginning to suffocate me. Avoid!!
