Viva la disappointment

To say there has been a lot of anticipation for Coldplay’s fourth album, Viva La Vida, meaning ‘Death and All His Friends’ is an understatement. Legendary producer Brian Eno, borrowed their album title from a painting by renowned artist Frida Kahlo. This time around, Coldplay have relied on U2 producer Brian Eno to help take their sounds to a completely different direction. Viva La Vida comes across as experimental but does not leave you in the dark.

Tracks ‘Yes’ explores a mid-eastern, Arab feeling on a very happy note but doesn’t involve me musically. With long epic orchestral synths, percussion, organ and electronic sounds periodically playing, gone are those beautiful melodies with the guitar that gave Colplay its signature sound. There seems to be no clear hit singles that sweep you off your feet and keep you yearning for more. The album gives you a textured feeling and seems produced off of an amateur music production software easily downloadable by any internet savvy teenage kid.

Admittedly there is more sound structure then that of ‘X&Y’ which was released in 2005 but if you string up an atmosphere plug-in with loads of FX and you’ve got ambient sounds moving all over the place.

Chris Martin however doesn’t fail to sooth your mind with his charming voice and amazingly varies the pitch of his singing in accordance to the flow of the track. Coldplay have the right idea of creating variety in their music but their application has seemed to have gone completely wrong.
