This summer has been turning the heat right from the pongal releases. There has been a lot of hype around the recent releases which set the curiosity meter up and a thumps up to the cash registers. As hype has it the latest release the week Vinatandi Varuvaya, staring Trisha and Simbu received mixed and rave reviews. Of course it has its reasons, the director is on the A list, Simbu in his first suttle role, on and off mentions in the news and the excellent nextgen soothing to the ears music by AR Rahman.

As hype had it expectations were high. The movie is a narration by the male lead. The movie starts off with the male lead Karthik (role played by Simbu) and his family moving into their rented space with the landlords staying right above their floor. The land lord (played by Babu Anthony-yesteryear anti hero and action hero of Malayalam films) and his family consisting of the female lead Jessy.

Jessy is a Syrian Christian and a Malayalam.Jessy works asa program analyst while Karthik is a Hindu and purely Tamil. Karthik is pursuing film making after dropping out from mechanical engineering.

The families have it all good and easily strike a cord with each other.

Fate has more in store.

Karthik falls flat for Jessy right from the first sight (he has his reasons but is never explained). This is followed by the frolics everyone does at that age, that includes trying to catch a glance of Jessy with out being noticed, the trying to impress modes, staging uncanny meetings and more getting into the frame of Jessy to get noticed. This eventually pays off when Jessy notices Karthik and develops a friendly approach. This is all foiled when Karthik expresses his love for Jessy. Then there is a sudden disappearance by Jessy and is located in Allepy Kerala. Jessy is on her maiden unsupervised visit to her grandma’s.

On understanding Jessy’s whereabouts Karthik set off with his camera man friend to meet her.

After a long trail he finally locates her in a church in Alleppy. She is shocked and surprised to find Karthik there. Karthik explains the motive of his journey was to apologize for his brash behavior. Then sets off a series of incidents which makes Jessy rethink about Karthik. They head back to Chennai together and find themselves falling more in love with eachother. Back in Chennai they start seeing each other often and spending more time with each other. Jessy is still apprehensive about going to the next level. Karthik has his prerogatives set for the relationship i.e. he wants totake a leap from friendship to love. Jessy however wants to take it slow.

The blow comes in with the entry of Jessy’s brother who challenges Karthik to a brawl. Karthik an ardent boxer blows fists on Jessy’s brother and his thug friends. This sets things to go awfully wrong for the couple.

Then starts off the serious side of the movie with all opposition from Jessy’s family. To find out if the couple finally overcomes all hurdles and unite or succumb to the pressures and fall apart. Watch the movie to know more.

The production value is excellent, the camera work is excellent. Each frame looks rich. The locales are carefully selected to match the mood and frame. Trisha looks stunningly beautiful though simple. Simbu is brash as usual but manages to capture your attention. Music and background score are good however it doesn’t stand out.

The disconnect in the film happens towards the end with the story. Also a love story has to build on you; however you can never totally connect with the characters. Also you never at once in the movie have felt that the lead pair has to be together. There is no impact both emotionally to approve of the lovers and the love story. There are quiet a lot of tweaks in the script. Like Karthik’s movie audience you ask the same questions when you leave the movie hall i.e. “the movie is kinda abrupt”.

So in the end “Vinatandi Varuvaya” has its moments but fails to strike a cord with the audience
