Prologue:

The need to buy an electric water heater occurred to me many times in the past but I was a little averse to it from the beginning. Why? It was because of two reasons.

Firstly, we did not wish to inflate our already inflated electricity bill and secondly the electric immersion rod was performing its duty well enough during all the 365 days of the year. Yeah! Hot water is required in my family during the entire 12 month cycle. Just that in this year(2013), it was the fourth immersion rod that was bought to replace the former burnt one.

Secondly, the earlier three heaters burnt out owing to mishaps on our side. The maids and helpers often forgot to switch off the heater after usage which led to frequent accidents. I decided to think otherwise and get ourselves an electric water heater.

The Search:

The search began for an electric water heater. A quick visit to the big electronic shops in the market yielded the following results. I decided to perform an internet search on reviews and ratings of the products.

1.Bajaj Water Heaters: The most common fish in the market which were available in almost all electrical stores. The dealers were pouring in good discounts as well for spot bookings. The heaters looked very plain and well cheap! Most of my near and dear ones were using this brand so I decided to get an end user feedback. They advised me against going for this brand owing to longer heating times and unavailability of parts.

2.Bajaj Water Heaters: I have seen their advertisement on Television. My trusted salesperson told me that “this brand is picking up good pace in the market and there are very few complaints from customers as well”. The online reviews also spoke in favor of this brand. Plus the product was rugged and priced competitively. I decided to shortlist the same.

3.AO Smith Water Heaters: The website is very well furbished and would create a lasting impression on any prospective visitor. The products are very well categorized and all their specifications are thoroughly explained and documented. I decided to check this brand in their brick and wall showroom. Product looked neutral and compact. The installation offered was free of cost. But when I checked the end users reviews on the net, I found multiple negative reviews complaining of early rusting, body cracking and water not staying warm even for 1 hour. Rejected!

4.Venus Water Heaters: This brand of water heater was suggested by our electrician. I checked for their existence in my city and found that there were a handful number of dealers selling this item. The website also furnished detailed information about each product(although I was not much moved initially). I checked in with few neighbors who were already using this brand for many years. Received all positive feedback about this product and decided to place an order. When I checked in with the dealers, I found that either their stock was empty or only few stocks were left. Seemed like a hot selling product.

5.There were other brands like Crompton Greaves, Havells and Haier but I did not check them out since I had already decided to go forward with Venus.

Deciding on the type:

Electric type water heaters were available in instant and storage types. An instant water heater takes less time to heat the water at the cost of less storage capacities. The storage type water heaters on the other hand had more capacity but take more time to heat the water. We decided to go for the latter. Plus the storage type heaters also had the provision of storing hot water for a longer period of time.

Deciding on the capacity:

The household water heaters were generally in the capacity from 6L-15L. For a family of 2-3 persons, a 6 liter may have suited their use, but we decided to go in for the 10 liter one given our moderate to heavy usage. Now after using the heater for 2 months, I somehow feel I should have gone in for the 15 liter one in the first place.

Installation/Performance:

I got the installation done from my local electrician. The installation is very well documented in the instruction manual. The color is in beige and matches well with the decor of our washroom. The build is sturdy and the body looks rugged.

The water heater is performing very well with zero hiccups. It is used more than 3-4 times each day. The electricity consumption is also less. I would provide a few stats:

1.For warm water, it takes 4-5 minutes to heat the water at the desired temperature.

2.For hot water, it takes some 10-12 minutes to heat the water at the desired temperature.

3.For very hot water, it takes some 10-12 minutes to heat the water at the desired temperature.

Some good things:

1.The water heater is provided with a temperature control knob, which helps to control/set the temperature according to your need.

2.Just like all other water heaters, it is fitted with a thermostat to prevent damage and saves on electricity as well.

3.It is a 5-star-rated product which is meant to save on your electricity bill.

4.Water keeps warm for more than 10 hours which is really helpful.

Improvements:

1.A screen should have been provided to display the temperature.

2. More color options to suit the user’s tastes.

My Recommendation:

Venus is an old and reliable brand of water heaters. Although the products may be costly from her siblings/competitors, but it is better to walk the extra mile for a sturdy, reliable and hassle free experience.

Thanks for reading!
