Varanasi, also famously known as Kashi among Hindus, is most popular pilgrimage point for the Hindus.
Varanasi has been named so beacuse the city in ancient times was located on the bank of the rivers "Varuna"
and "Assi".
According to the Hindu mythology, it is also said that river Ganges while passing through Varanasi
fell so much in love with the city that it literally turned its back to have a look at this city.
Varanasi is the only place whereg Ganges curves back in its entire stretch from Gangotri to the bay of bengal.
It is also famous for Buddhist pilgrim spot Sarnath(10 kms from Varanasi) where Lord Buddha attained Enlightenment.
Few Ghats to vist are: Dashasvamedh Ghat, Assi Ghat, Tulsi ghat, Harish Chandra Ghat
People wear'Gamcha'(a cotton towel), as they go bathing in Ganga and drink Thandai(a coolant with milk
as its base), which have become a part of the cultural identity of traditional ways of Varanasi. Music,
drama and entertainment have found a place in the lives of the people. Its dance traditions and vocal and
instrumental music is highly developed and one can catch the glimpses of folk drama in the'Ramlila'
organized before Dussehra.
