Varalaru - The History of Godfather

Movie Review

If there is one movie the Tamil Movie Industry, the Tamil Movie Fans and especially Ajith's fans were most expecting this Diwali, it would be K.S.Ravikumar directed Varalaru - The History of Godfather produced by NIC Arts S.S.Chakkravarthy. And this is the movie which has definitely made the auspicious Diwali, a mega 'Thala' Diwali for the fans of Ultimate Star Ajith!

K.S. Ravikumar in an interview to a leading magazine a few weeks back had expressed his faith in the movie that it would prove to be a blockbuster hit for Ajith. He had also commented that Varalaru can fetch the Ultimate Star even a National Award this year.

All we can say now is, he wasn't exaggerating..!!

Thala Pola Varuma! This is what Ajith's fans say after watching the movie!! It is worth the wait!

Ultimate Star Ajith is back with a bang after AVM's 'Thirupathy' in Godfather, renamed as 'Varalaru - The History of Godfather' to take advantage of the State Government's order to grant entertainment tax exemption to movies titled in Tamil. This handsome actor, badly needing a blockbuster hit has an oppurtunity to exihibit his versatility in acting in Varalaru.

The veteran director K.S.Ravikumar teams up with Ajith once again after the success of Villan and comes up with yet another winner! For the first time, Ajith dons a triple role of a father and his two sons. Not many actors except a few like Chevalier Sivaji Ganeshan and Padhmashri Kamal Hasan have been successful portraying more than one role in a movie.

In Varalaru, the director has devised a character for Ajith which is winning accolades for both of them. Ajith's portrayal of Shiva Shankar, a dancer depicted as an effeminate-looking man has been never before seen on Tamil screens in recent times. Usually such characters are presented in a derogatory manner in Tamil cinema to provide unhealthy humour.

But Varalaru makes a difference and that proves to be a major crowd-puller for the movie.

Ajith lends dignity to the character and performs the role with great elan and sophistication. He isn't called the Ultimate Star just like that!

The movie is all about Shiva Shankar (Ajith), an ageing business tycoon bound to his wheelchair who sacrifices his passion as a classical dancer and finally his life for the sake of his wife (Kaniha) and his two sons Vishnu (Ajith) and Jeeva (Ajith). Ajith as Shiva Shankar, a classical dancer is a slightly effeminate-looking man. His body language makes his marriage proposals go awry. Sujatha expresses her willingness to have her daughter Kaniha married to him.

The marriage is about to take place but Kaniha ridicules our protagonist by commenting that she wants to get married only to a man and walks out of the marriage ceremony. Not able to withstand the shame, Ajith's mother passes away. In his outrage, Ajith rapes Kaniha but feels guilty later and wants to marry her. Meanwhile, Kaniha gets pregnant and gives birth to two sons. One is raised by the father and the other by the mother. The son raised by the mother wants to take revenge on his father for his deed and the other son struggles to save his father from him. How the father is saved and the family comes together forms the rest of the story. The movie picks up tempo with the entrance of Jeeva and things look up, keeping you riveted to your seat till the end.

Asin as Dhivya looks ravishing in Varalaru. She recently received the Best Actress Filmfare Award for her role in Ghajini as Kalpana. She has a couple of songs along with Ajith and there's not much scope in the movie for the award winner to perform. It is Kaniha as Ajith's wife who scores. She is glamourous in the title sequence and comes out very well in the emotional sequences, as well as the mentally deranged mother. Kaniha, where did you hibernate all these days?

The movie has the score by the music genius Padhmashri A.R.Rahman. ARR pairs with Ajith and K.S.Ravikumar after a long time. Innisai and Theeyil top the chart followed by Katril and Thinam Thinam Deepavali. It is a surprise that all the nine songs composed by ARR are in the movie! But somehow, the 'Rahman Touch' is seen missing in the BGM.

Kanal Kannan's stunts for Ajith have been loved by Thala fans especially in Citizen and Villan. The flashback stunt sequence and the climax fight which has been choreographed with the support of the FX team will entertain the fans. The movie had featured P.C.Sriram but later on when he dropped out of the project, the cinematography was taken care by his assistants. Though the film has been in the making for a long time, there is no staleness. The make-up department deserves a special applause.

Ajith's make up for the Innisai song sequence boosts the excellent choreography. Thotta Tharani's part as the art director is commendable throughout the movie. The rich ambience and decor of the settings of Ajith's residence and Innisai song captures the audience's fancy. Credits to Tharani!

And on the negative side, the director need not have resorted to the bawdy comedy of Thottapuram. If he had thought that this was a commercial ingredient for the movie's success, he is grossly wrong.

It is Ajith Kumar all the way who just carries the whole movie in his shoulder with a brilliant triple role performance. Ajith as Shiva Shankar lives the character with understanding and enhances his portrayal with subtle mannerism. The flashback sequences have been executed with such finesse and Innisai will be remembered as one of the ultimate songs of Thala! He rocks in the role of a classical dancer!

In the wake of success wave of Varalaru surfing on, Ajith has to remind himself that he is one of the few gifted artists who combine both looks and acting skills on screen. It is his responsibility as a celebrity to satisfy the expectations of his fans and also entertain the family audiences as he did with Kadhal Mannan, Mughavari and Poovellam Un Vaasam. He has to review all those movies he acted since Amaravathi and list out those genuinely successful movies among them. He will have to find a formula for the success of his movies. Movies like Mughavari will have to be released once in a while along with the Amarkalam and Dheena genre. Worst Movies of Ajith like Anjaneya and Paramasivan must be history and should not repeat itself! All of his fans would love to see their Thala as a path breaker and on the way to success after success. There is a dialogue in the movie 'Nadakurathu Nalla Nadakanummna, Nadanthatha Appa Appa Nenaichu Paarkanum'. Golden words and it applies to Ajith!

Ultimate Star has definitely stepped up a gear with Varalaru and now looks more solid in dual and triple roles than other younger generation stars. He has done all the three roles with ease. K.S.Ravikumar must be appreciated for extracting the best from Ajith Kumar once again after Villan.

VERDICT :Diwali Saravedi from the Ultimate Star! A Mega Treat for Ajith Fans!
