This One Deserves Success. Review on Valotte - Julian Lennon

Considering whose shadow he is stepping out of, Julian Lennon certainly comes out with flying colours. In spite of knowing that he would inevitably be compared with his illustrious father, Julian does not shy away from singing his songs with a typical John Lennon flavour — especially the way he takes his high notes. Even his performance on stage is reminiscent of his late father... I saw him on Top of The Pops once and his body language and head movements were very much like Papa Lennon. I don't think the imitation was deliberate... it was probably natural.

The album is highly listen-able... though not the kind that you could listen to again and again. However, the songs have this tendency to grow on you... slowly but surely. The title track, Valotte is very melodic and Julian has sung it well, with a lot of feeling. With its arpeggio keyboards, it sounds very much like a John Lennon song.

The high point of the album is, of course, Too Late For Goodbyes, which made it to the charts and got Julian his share of the limelight. It is undoubtedly a good song by pop standards, well-written and well-arranged. Its rhythm is infectious and the tune tends to go round and round inside your head.

Do listen to this album. It's definitely a notch above the regular pop fare that blares over the airwaves these days.
