It’s surely worth a watch. From the director of SupermanReturns, The Usual Suspects and the X-men Series, here comes Valkyrie. The moviehas Tom Cruise playing a role of a key traitor in the renegade faction. Those peoplewere determined to give a better future to Germany. Make it free from Hitler. Themovie happens around 1944, when this operation Valkyrie took place; they made aplan to Assassinate Hitler.
Themovie demands certain knowledge of history as prerequisite, but that much allof us have gained through the Std 10 History textbook (Even I didn’t likesocial sciences much, but the world war chapters were far too much interestingto ignore). The movie set in backdrops of Nazi Germany, depicts the warscenario well.
Asthe movie reveals later, there were total 15 known attempts to assassinate the Germandictator, unfortunately none accomplished. This is somewhat a documentary versionof one of those attempts. The faction made a tricked use of the emergency rule stabilisationplan, the Valkyrie (or Walküre).
I personally didn’t like the way Hitler was portrayed in the movie, he appeared too aged and out of focus, and I don’t think Hitler was like that at any point of his life; other than this aspect, no room to criticize.
The movie does not pose much challenging situations for the actors, but at the same time its worth mentioning that the united presentation is commendable. Credit more goes to the director.
The release date of the movie was postponed a number of times, from as early as June 27, 2008 to as late as February 14, 2009. Also there were many problems in the filming in Germany; the crew was not allowed to shoot on all the places in which the actual plot and execution took place.
Despite the late release and subdued hype, the movie till date has managed to collect a total of over $164 million worldwide.
The movie made me nostalgic. Long back in college days I had decided to read Hitler’sAutobiography ‘Mein Klamph’. At that time I could not handle the heavy languages never actually went passed a score of pages. Now also I don’t think my vocab-has increased much, but still have to give it a one more try.
Today I even searched Wikipedia about the facts related to the movie, and it seems that it’s much resembling to real facts, (another interesting fact is the Colonel Clausvon Stauffenberg, looked so like Tom that he was an Obvious choice for the character.)
