Vaalu is about a guy who falls in love with a girl and it showcases the attempts he makes to get her. That's it. This is the story.
At least, the girl has a cancer or the boy meets an accident or at least the parents don't agree, or something different would have been appreciated. But Vaalu is a regular, love story with commercial elements. For how long, Kollywood is gonna make films like these - " Oru oorule oru hero, hero heroine eh paakuraaru, love panraaru." .
Since I already disregarded the plot, there is no point in talking about script. Screenplay, however, was pretty gripping in the first half.
The movie is loaded with Thala elements and sometimes you might wonder if its a Simbu Movie or Thala movie. Cinematography was good and vibrant. Though its 3 years old, there is an amount of freshness in the screen. Editing was jumpy at some places and felt it lacked continuity in a few. Music by Thaman for a change was good and he restrained himself from copying the tunes from Tollywood.
Simbu is a very talented artiste. No doubt about it. GVM toned him a lot in terms of dialogues and body language. After that he became a different actor. But I got a feeling, he slightly got back his old "Sonna thaan Kadhala" style of mannerisms.
He is still subtle but I saw some shades of those mannerisms. Hansika was good and had some scope for acting. Santhanam was good with his timing and dialogues. This is the period, 3 years back, he was in prime form.
So overall, Vaalu is a decent entertainer which has all elements of commercial cinema. The fans get to see Simbu on screen after 3 years and its a decent comeback. There is an overdose of Thala factor, and it felt like simbu is giving a tribute to his star, which was not required. Its an old story, which is neatly gift wrapped and decorated with ribbons and genoeously painted with vibrant colors. That's Vaalu.
