Magic Of Air - IV. Review on Usha Astra-1050mm

Usha fans come in wide variety of ranges with royal, elegant series like Dynasty, Majestic, and Windsor etc. These fans are really elegant in design with fancy lams, Golden flanges, under lights and cool colors. Many of these fans have four blades with eye-catching decorations. But you really compromise good airflow over the looks. Just have a look at those pictures on MS the designs are unconventional and fantastic. But we were not interested in flashy decoration stuff we just wanted a cool breeze when we come back home after hard day of work rather than a dim light which would solve nothing but the purpose of style, which has zero value when you are tired of heat. So we went for a simple white color fan with three blades but outstanding in performance. Usha’s range of fans is awesome. No other company comes close to it. From Table fans to Ceiling fans and great exhaust fans there is no limit to it. If you are to make a decision on buying any type of the fan then my request to you please give Usha fans a serious thought. If you like Bajaj more then go for a bike rather.

We have a 3 blade white colored Usha Astra model. It is also available in 3-4 more colors. The type is a double ball bearing type used for rotation of blades with respect to rotor. Now this in a way increases the life of fan. One of the major reasons for fans getting damages or going out of order is rusting off or wearing off of ball bearings due to friction and lack of grease, which reduces the friction and smoothens the motion. So having additional set of bearings would only increase the overall life. Periodic over oiling give no trouble at all unless it is some other factor damaging motor like leaking of water in to the motor or burning due to overloading.

Mentioning the regulator type it comes with a box type regulator. There are three speed levels to select from. As I mentioned in my previous review we can fix any type of regulator the fans but it should really make a sense. I personally don’t prefer box type 3 level regulators for modern day fans with high peak speed. So one thing to look out for is a regulator. The type of regulator I mentioned comes for about 100 Rs.

If the blades are broad and flat then there would be least air resistance and the motion would be a pure rotation and no airflow. With some squeaks and noise the fan would be of no use. In order to generate a good flow the blades need to bent in an angle so as to maximize the flow and that to in all directions. More bending wouldn’t be good either since then air resistance will come in to play increasing the load on the motor. I’m sure these companies must be having computer simulations and wind testing before bringing on the product in the market. Also the slightly exceeding air resistance could make the shaft or the central rotor to wobble messing up the whole process and giving minimum efficiency.

Using a proper regulator is also a part of fan efficiency. You should be able to utilize the range of speed of your fan to a maximum or at least optimum level. Doing a over oiling after some years would certainly increase the life of the fan by years and also save you from the irritating noise. Most popular and widely used regulators today are small solid-state continuous type of regulator. I don’t know the technical name for it but it is a very small in size and can be easily fixed on the electric Switch Board. There are in all 6-8 levels to select from and the knob is continues type. If the peak speed of the fan is very high then this type of regulator gives you a wide range of speeds to select from. Old regulators have 3-4 levels so sometimes a level 1 also feels good. In winter or cold condition this could be a problem. So one thing to look out for is a regulator. The type of regulator I mentioned comes for about 100 Rs.

Usha majesty is a good fan with good sweeping area. Price is comparatively more than Bajaj or Khaitan but there is one more factor strengthening this fan is its durability and performance. The product come with a limited 7 years big warranty.
