Unnai Pol Oruvan is a remake of ‘Wednesday’, the film with which UTV, Nassaruddin shah & Anupam Kher created history. In it’s Tamil remake, UTV created another history by bringing together, two giants of south Indian films, Kamal Hassan and Mohan Lal. For those who have seen ‘Wednesday’ I think the only attraction is the presence of these two veterans. Otherwise the movie is almost retained its essence from the original film.

A common man’s outburst and take on the terrorism – we can summarise the plot so easily.

Kamal hassandid a good job in the film. Kamal underplayed the role to give the feel of the common man and the original ‘Kamal’ when visited in the climax it become a feel which we could not forget. It is however, true that his presence failed to maintain the common man image as Nassruddin shah managed to do in ‘Wednesday’. (Kamal holds the super star image and even for people who didn’t see the original will assume that there is some good side for the leading star. The image of ‘Indian’ is not easy to erasable from the mind of audience. The excess use of hair dye and its projection was unwanted, at least for the character.

Mohan Laldid an excellent job, equaling to his performance in ‘Company’. Unlike ‘Wednesday’, the commissioner was in uniform and it was a thoughtful change and went well with Mohan Lal. In few scenes the editor let down the actor, otherwise he did the role with complete conviction. The actor is simply climbing heights in the year after few falls in previous years.

Laxmi’s presence in a small role was interesting. The character’s fight with the commissioner was little silly, still give reason for smile. Anuja Iyer, the TV journalist & the two police officers – did their roles very well.

The director (Chakri) did a good job in remaking the film keeping the original spirit. It do not however match to the original, despite the presence of two great actors. The animated Mush-Bush angle doesn’t impress. However, he succeeded in maintaining quality and keeping the same tempo as the original.

The back ground music by Shruthi Kamal Hassan was good, but fall short of excellence.

Cinematography was very good. (The direct sun rays shots were superb) Editing is good in most part but it could have been better.

This is not a ‘Masala’ film but a nail biting suspense film with a message and a warning.

I can brand the film as ‘Very good’ where I somehow felt it falls short of ‘Excellence’. (May be it is because I have seen ‘Wednesday’ and didn’t have the ‘suspense’ factor to work for the film.) For those who are yet to watch ‘Wednesday’, it is a must watch. Also it is a good watch for both ‘Kamal Hassan’ and ‘Mohan Lal’ fans
