I watched UPO on Monday, i've not seen " A Wednesday ". UPO was like one tight slap! It is a hard-hitting classic! The film is crisp, precise and perfect to the core. Just under 2 hours of running time, no songs, fights, heroines, comedy, villians and it's a tamil film! Only filmmakers like Kamal can make this happen in tamil. Credit to Kamal, inspite being a Star himself, every now and then he comes up with films like this. The reviews, story has been out and everyone knew it.
The performing part is splendid. Kamal & Lal are awesome to say the least! Every others in the cast, be it Ganesh( Arif), Sethu( Bharath Reddy), Lakshmi, IIT Dropout towards the end deserves special mention.
Music by Shruthi Hassan, for a debutant she has exceeded expectations especially in BGM. One more fine talent emerging from Hassan family! Lyrics by Kamal & Manushyaputran keeps you gripped throughout the soundtrack, though not used in film.
Technically the film is slick, shot in RED ONE camera 4K resolution for the first time in tamil. Editing is fantastic, these kind of films require chic editing and it's been taken care off. Dialogues are another important factor, this film is based on mainly conversations, so it's all the more important that the dialogues must be precise & sharp, that's exactly it turned out to be!
Directed by Chakri - He has done a neat job! he wisely made use of the resources( Kamal & Lal) and handled it with dedication!
Kamal as always played his part well! his creativity in adding certain issues, and clever usage of dialogues to discuss certain issues proves yet again that he thinks ahead of others. Especially, the scene where he bursts out is an absolute treat to watch in terms of acting! No wonder our ULAGANAYAGAN has completed 50 Years when he is 55! Tamil audience will welcome him and his works for many more years, till his lifetime and even after!
Mohanlal's acting is subtle and sheer class! i'm watching him for the first time, I have'nt watched any of his films before be it Malayalam or Tamil. He has made full justice to the character he played. His interactions and altercations with Lakshmi has been conceptualized well.
Comparisons are inevitable! people will compare the Film, the lead actors performance. But I have no doubt that the tamil version performance is in no way be inferior, infact I would say that it is superior. I have seen Shah & Kher's work before, they could have done this very well but Our southies have projected in their way and it's appealing. Kamal can do what Naseer do, but Naseer cannot do what Kamal does! It goes the same for Lal & Kher!
I conclude this as a Masterpiece and a genuine effort by Kamal. Remaking a hit film or a normal masala films are easier than this, but while remaking films that was critically acclaimed, one needs to be careful. Kamal has left no stone unturned and suceeded in his attempt. It's upto the audience to embrace these kind of efforts which will pave way for many hard hitting classics like this!
