University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering is a hallowed institution where many generations of students have had the privilege to study and be taught by generations of brilliant teachers. The college is at a convenient location and can be accessed by public transport, namely BMTC, if you do survive the bus trip that is.

Yours truly studied in this college too and can swear on a stack of bibles ( or the koran or gita or a sportstar, whichever you prefer) that it was a truly awesome experience to study there.I graduated from UVCE in the recent past , so its safe to assume that I know what I am talking about here.

The first thing that I learnt and want ppl who want to know whether to study there or not is that you have to learn to be self-sufficient. Well, what do I mean? What I mean is that lecturers may or may not take classes often, the lab eqmt may or may not work, but frankly its upto you as a student to make the most of things that work and lecturers who do take classes often. I know that efforts are on ( they were on towards the end of my studies there) to make things more strict out there and more organized and I hope they have succeeded, if they haven't read my earlier lines to know what to do :)

The faculty is good and reputed, though now they have been lured by quite a few private colleges and things have deteriorated, but it still passes muster I think.

The syllabus is different from VTU and according to what I heard recently the syllabus has been improved to meet changing standards all around.

All in all its a good college to study..let me put it like this - UVCE is a college where ''If you wanna improve, you will be able to and if you wanna screw up, you will be able to'' - put plainly, if you go there to study and don't bother with anything else you will succeed, if you go there to mess around and bunk classes, you can do that too easily. This college doesn't have a strict lecturer vigil or strong management like private colleges so you are mostly out by yourself and what happens 4 years down the line will be wholely and solely dependent on you.

Since I studied there its tough for me to say that the college is deteriorating, but it is and a rot seems to have set in,but things are changing and by the time I left things were improving.I probably am sounding very passionate but thats the case when you are commenting about something very close to your heart...I have tried to be as objective as possible though :)

Placements were good and that situation hasn't changed a lot, I believe.

My verdict, give it a good thought, ask around and if you are even slightly convinced, join this college.

I am updating this on 6/17/03 based on suggestions by Bonny The Kid who feels that people might need the following information:

a) College is bang next to K R Circle, and is accessible from most parts of the city through BMTC[Remember the bus ride I mentioned earlier?]

a) College has hostel facilities

b) Entrance into college is through CET - Common Entrance Test - conducted by Govt of Karnataka. The test can be taken by students from non-Karnataka who wish to study engineering in Karnataka

c) College has a canteen. The canteen is a tin shed surrounded by broken desks and chairs. The only good thing about the canteen is that it is a general assembling area for people who are the least bit interested in studies, like yours truly. Critical plans like deciding teams for cricket matches, movies to watch, places to hangout during the weekends happens here. Also the latest lowdown on which lecturer is making whose life miserable can also be found out here

I just loved my college. Period.
