When you don't forget

I’ve never been good at introductions. Seriously after the whole “4 years of English in highschool, not to mention those AP lit and Composition courses” I still get remarks like “Great essay but were’s the thesis???” So I’ll just skip it.

>> But first a little note...most of these movies....actually all of these movies were seen by yours truly a very long time ago so please excuse any inaccurate dialogues. And if I get them right...which I hope I do... I think its to the credit of these characters that are so unforgettable. Now I wish my Poli Sci class was like this (are you listening Melcavage??). But I digress.

Priety Zinta in Dil Se

“tum ladke to theek type ke ho” and “are you a virgin?”

I still remember asking people about this movie cause it came out around the time I left India and being a big SRK fan I was dying to see it.  All people were talking about was this new girl who was in the movie for about 30 mins. God what an impact. But most of the credit goes to the way the character was written. Come to think of it, her character is a lot like Madhuri Dixit’s in Devdas cause it brings a much needed break from the heavy story line. –Well in the case of Devdas a lot of overacting and melodrama.

Amir Khan in Rangeela

“aaj apun ka happy birthday hai re” or “sirf time to pucha hai, ghadi thodi mangi hai” or “uska bad luck hi kharab tha” and “Aye, tu movie dekhne aaya hai ya meri taang” and “apun public hai....” I can’t remember the rest...

This guy came up with the best one liners!! Apparently Amir spent a couple of months learning this Bombay Hindi cause his Hindi is pretty damn good.

Aaj Kappu from Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega

On the phone with A R Rehman “ aaj kal tere gana ek jaise lag rahe hai. Sambhal yaar, industry bhohot jaldi bhool jati hai” or “film ka naam hai, ‘Hum dil walo ko bhohot kuch hota hai sanam’”

Falling into sub plots is pretty usual for Hindi movies. But Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega did’nt make that blunder. The scenes between Aslam bhai and this guy were hilarious and actually added to this movie. This character may not have come out so well if it hadn’t been for Aslam bhai’s gullible film crazy character. But again, great one liners and good acting and tremendously funny.

Sonali Bendre in Sarfarosh

So it was a small role but I “don’t mind” that.

Sonali Bendre pulled a Priety Zinta with her bubbly loud and fun loving character and she certainly did it well. She matched Aamir Khan’s serious and semi conservative personality with her modern and spontaneous one.  Remember the hospital scene??

Ajay Devgan- Company— Oh My God has this guy evolved or what!!! From his days of dancing around trees to just sort of fading into the background he’s seriously become one of the best actors. But in Company his cool and perceptive attitude is amazing. The scene where he’s actually “calculating” the corrupt police inspector’s worth is so well done.

Kabhi Kabhi meh Rishi Kapoor. I’m a die hard fan of DDLJ and I can completely see Shahrukh Khan’s character in DDLJ has been “inspired” from Rishi Kapoor’s character in Kabhi Kabhi.  The recurring motifs in the two movies like the instrument that both Vicky and Raj have and that Vicky goes after his fiancé Neetu Sing like Raj goes after Simran in DDLJ. Unfortunately Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Sing actually got married and Shahrukh Khan and Kajol didn’t. - yes I’m bitter.

Juhi Chawala as Rashmi in Quayamat se Quayamat Tak

“From forth the fatal loins of these two foes A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life…” no that was not Rashmi...

I always associated this movie as being the Indian Romeo and Juliet. No doubt both did a great job what with it being their first movie and all. I especially like Juhi Chawla’s character because she was so typical of girls of that background. Being shy and quiet but opening up to Amir Khan cause she liked him She even had the guts to go up to him when he was sitting with his friends in one scene and “hint” pretty obviously(!) that she was going to the “place” to wait for him.  Now even I won’t be able to do that!!!

Honorary mention :-  Anupam Kher in Lamhe

“Yaar tum to bhohat time le rahe ho” and “god ka sense of humor bhi bhot sick hota ja raha hai”

I think I don’t even need to explain this one. The whole “old songs” routine and the retarded child scene was him at his best. Anupam Kher is capable of a lot of versatility in terms of his acting but I wonder why he doesn’t take it p seriously.

Well here’s my list guys. I hope its not too cliched... but if it is...well...I’m not in the habit of going back..
