Umrao Jaan

Where do I start from ... from the start I guess .... :P

The film starts with Umrao Jaan Ada singing ...

Ek Tute Hue Dil Ki Awaaz Muje Kahiye .....

I was spellbound there and then ....and so was the writer Mirza Haadi Ruswa. He goes to pay a visit to Umrao Jaan Ada and she then narrates the story of her life. Of how the innocent girl Ameeran was kidnapped and sold away to a brothel owner Khannum Sahib(Shabana Azmi). Ameeran is now Umrao. Soon Umrao turns to become the most beautiful courtesan in Khannum's brothel. Despite of her friends (Ayesha Julka) warnings to stay away from love, she falls in love with Nawab Sultan (Abhishek Bachchan). Nawab reciprocates her feelings. Love blossoms. But for courtesans love is forbidden. Everything they have to do is for money. Nawab Sultans father isnt happy with his sons acquaintance with Umrao Jaan Ada and dis-inherits his son Nawab Sultan. Now he is penniless and has nothing to offer to Khannum Shahib to meet Umrao. Nawab asks Umrao to wait for him till he comes again to free her from Khannums cage. Faiz Ali (Suneil Shetty) is rich and is mesmerised by Umrao's beauty and is ready to pay any price to get her. Will Umrao Jaan succumb to Faiz Ali ? Will Nawab Sultan return to her ? What will be the fate of Umrao Jaan and her love ? To get these answers Watch the film.

Performances-

Aishwarya Rai (Umrao Jaan) - Simply Mesmerising. The Queen is back and in Style. Undoubtedly this is the best performance of her career. I havent seen the previous version. But for me Aishwarya is the best Umrao Jaan Ada. I cant imagine any1 else playing Umrao Jaan. The poise.. the grace..the charm..Omg I am short of words. I was enchanted. She danced soo well. She is the best dancer we have (after madhuri ofcourse). And she looked so gorgeous.

'Jise bhi dekh le woh palat kar..usiko apna gulam karle.'

Shabana Azmi (Khanum Sahib) - She can never disappont. Amazing performance. I loved her character as well.Very well writtern.

Abhishek Bachchan (Nawab Sultan) - He looked hot. Good performance. The best choice for Nawab Sultan. Sexy Pathan. Not his best performance but He did exactly what he was supposed to do. mmuaaahhh lub u abhi. u rox.

Sunil Shetty (Faiz Ali) - He was good as well. In the beginning I hated his look. spoiler But he was a dacoit so that explains the black pathani's and excessive use of surma in his eyes. I felt like slapping him when he tells abhishek that he slept with Umrao.

Divya Dutta & Ayesha Julka - They did their parts well. They didnt have much to do though.

Himani Shivpuri - She was great. Did her part convincingly.

Puru Rajkumar (Gauhar) - Surprizingly he looked cool. Acted well.

Kulbhushan Kharbanda - This guy is awesome. He had a small role. But really did it well.

The girl who plays small Ameeran was good too. Rest of the cast did their parts well.

The best part of the movie was everyone's character was beautifully etched.

Technical-

Amazing Direction. He is a indeed a genius. Gr8 comeback after LoC. I always knew he had a vision... and what you see on screen is magical...

Average Editing. I didnt find the movie boring at any point of time. But some scenes could have been edited out with no negative effect.

Great Choreography.

Superb Cinematography. The sets were lavish and a treat to the viewers eyes.

The Dialogues were beautiful but the subtitles were badly done.

Bful costumes.well done designers.

I wont be surprised if UJ bags all technial awards.

Songs -

I thought the songs were monotonous and I lyked juss a couple of them, but I love each and every song now.

Ek tute hue - The first song and I had tears in my eyes...

Salaam - Beautiful songs. Lovely https://lyrics. Aish is a treat to watch. Her dress was fantastic. She dances soo well.

Phele Phehel - I always wanted it to be a mujra song. The promo disappointed me. but the film doesnt. Omg the chemistry between aish - abhi is soooooooo gud.

Bheka Diya hume - Beautifully picturised. Simply simple and beautiful https://lyrics.

Juthe Izaam - another well choreographed song

Main na mil sakun - Depicts the pain of separation like no other song... I had tears in my eyes...ash looked b'ful and her expressions were gr8 :crying:

Pooch Rahe Hai - Its the aish in all blue song. Ameeran's sufferings and sorrows shown in one song.gr8 one as well.

Bitiyan- I hated that song. but its nycly done in the film.

Bheka diya (sad) - the film ends with a sad version of bheka diya...it was touchy and the lyrics were painful ...but b'ful. I am going to record that part when I go to watch it again.

Fav Scenes-

The 1st scene when Umrao is singing Ek tute dil.

Scenes of small Ameeran with her family.

Aish luking into the mirror and aish on the swing. she looked gorgjus. All her closeups were awesome.

All scenes btw Maulvi saheeb and Aishwarya.

When Abhi - Ash meet for the first time.

Salaam Song.

When Abhishek mentions he is marrying Saba and Ash gets upset. That whole scene and the juthe ilzaam that follows.

When Abhishek tells Shabana - Main to Nawab rahunga aur aap kothewali.

When Abhishek leaves Aishwarya. :crying: Beautifully writtern.

When Ameeran meets her family in Faizabad.

Overall -

A must - watch and undoubtedly one of the best movies of the year. It is the only movie of 2006 that didnt have any of those WTF moments.

Rating - 8.5/10
