I was expecting this movie to be different right from the time promos were aired. And indeed, I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a love story – and hold on, not like those love stories, where boy-meets-girl, parents-oppose and then…. types. It’s a fresh approach towards telling a simple love story – the theme being “Opposite poles attract each other”.

Now, Kabir the college going guy who is struggling to complete his engineering for the last 10 years meets Kuhu, a crazy girl who wants things to work her way. First Kabir tries to get rid of Kuhu because she is very dominating though he does all the crazy things she wants him to do(because he doesn’t want to see her sad). But he wants to get rid of her and in this attempt, falls deeply in love with her.

At this point of time, she leaves him for she has some sad memories of her past haunting her. And then he changes completely from an irresponsible engineering student to a mature person who understands his responsibilities.

But then again, Ugly and Pagli are destined to meet and they meet at the behest of Zeenat Aman(Yes! she appears in a small role).

Ranvir Shorey as Kabir is at his usual best and Mallika Sherawat has evolved from her image to be identified as an actress. Sachin Khot has done a good job in handling this unusual love story with utmost sensibility and he has also handled the comedy scenes with the same perfection. Though I have not seen the original My Sassy Girl(the Korean film), I feel the movie is well-made. If it’s a well-made movie, then why bother even if it’s a frame to frame copy.

This movie is yet another one to prove that Bollywood is in for a change. The gap between the commercial cinema and art cinema is bridged with the advent of an ideal mix of both streams with movies like Aamir, Shaurya, Mithya, etc. with Ugly aur Pagli making a good contribution.

I am now looking forward for Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam and Mukhbir.
