I had visited udaipur in the past, but this time I visited the city along with my family, and came back with disappointment, The City still maintains it charms, but it is the attiitude of the people which hurts.1. Conveyance :Auto rickshaws are plenty, but they demand very high fares for short rides, and are reluctant to reduce the fare, one auto rickshaw fellow, even told me, that they preferred to carry only white-tourists, as they pay the sum demanded and do not haggle.2.Accomodation:The best place for tourist to stay is the Lal Ghat area or the Gangaur Ghat area, but sadly, you will not find a single Indian tourist staying there,.Most of the hotels on the lake do not offer bookings to Indian, even if you try to book 3-4 month in advance.I stayed at a Guest house, viz. Art-loft or Hotel Krishna Niwas, after sending one night rent in advance, I was offered a match-box sized room overlooking the lake, and immediately as I had checked in, I was shifted from the third to the second floor, as an “White” had arrived, and they were supposed to get a better view than us.Even though the owner claimed it to be a hotel, the only service available was hot water and a small double bed. No Ac, No Tv, No Waiters, No Room service, No intercom, No In house restaurant, Home made Tea on request at Rs.20/- a cup, and one plate Idli from an outside restauarant, was delivered for Rs.70/- a plate . (The identity of the south Indian restaurant being secretly guarded )Even though I informed the owner my desire to check out early , I was being asked to pay the full room rate for the cancelled day, and not the 50% which can be charged as per rules. After much argument, only the owner relented ,after I promised to give him a bad review.A very bitter experience indeed.3.Sight seeing.RTDC has a good city tour, which is economical as well as with a good guide, just do not fall in their shopping trap, when they take you to a so called good shop.City palace, Jagdish temple, Sahelion ki Bari, Pratap Memorial, all are worth a visit. You can also visit the nearby Nathdwara, Ekling ,Haldighat on a half day tour,4.Restaurants.Natraj dining hall in the city serves good thalis, another option is Sankalp near the bus depot for good south Indian fare.I had dinner at the Jagat Niwas and Amet at Ambrai, both had very good foods, but again seemed to favour foreigners , more than Indian as their guest.,and it showed in their welcome, and we were reluctantly offered a table at Jagat Niwas. The lale place in the middle of the lake pichola is being run by the Taj, and again due to very high min spend of Rs.3000/- person, it is not within limits for the average Indian, and is only being frequented by foregners.5.Shopping.Again the white only attitude at most shops in the lal ghat ,city place area, where the miniature paintings are sold ,as according to shop keepers, white give them much better prices, and only they are displayed the quality goods. Conclusion :Visit only if you have a white colored skin , or better to go to Mahabaleshwar, where your being Desi won,t hurt.
