First things first - the plot is somewhat revealed in this review.

The story:

I really liked the idea of weaving a story around this rare but dangerous disorder. Rarely we see bollywood treating a story as sensitive as this with so much ease. Even in Tare zameen par, once everyone was told about the disorder of the kid, we were not shown any more symptoms of the same in the movie. The kid went on to become a genius, super kid...bollywood ishtyle! It is at this moment that this movie is a bit mature (and different) than anyother hindi movie you have seen off late.

Even when the disorder is exposed, the director and the writer decided to move the story using couple of tense situations which are nicely executed. The tension in the auditorium was palpable in some scenes, especially when Kajol is shown skipping ropes to reduce her tummy! As Ajay devgan advances towards the room, I could sense so many people bending forward to see whats really gonna happen...Bingo - ! these are the moments where Ajay devgan wins as a director..NO DOUBT!

The cast

Kajol is superb. PERIOD.

Ajay devgan could have done better especially in comedy scenes. May be its my personal thing or something but whenever he tries to enact the drunken idiot, all he turns out looking is pure idiot who is trying very hard not to look like one

Divya dutta has done a good job and though sometimes excessive loud, she plays the part nicely.

Sumit raghvan (elder sarabhai) has played his part to perfection, and bollywood might have just discovered another nice artist whom we would see more of in the days to come

The other couple in the movie are ok. they have been mandated to look silly and they did it nicely, except for the last scene wherein they decide to get married. They are bad actors in that scene completely

The other supporting cast (be it the a sad wife of a psychic husband), or that kid who tries hard to look funny...everyone is above average

*The music

All the songs are very good to hear but am not sure I can say the same about the way they are used in the movie. While reality does look good in the movies, breaking up into a song just seconds after a huge disease-attack did look stupid (referring to - Saiyaan song)....Much to my surprise, the song I disliked hearing best fits the situation of the movie (dil dhakda hai) and I do admit that if you are prepared to ignore the excessive skin show by the dancers in this song, the song does work. The soulful title song is used superbly and so is the song titled - biwi phattey chak deni hai

The direction

From the start one can find very few faults with Ajay devgan's direction. He does have a good director's head on his shoulder. He does believe in too many close-ups which does look odd at times. Also, the failed attempt to have an overweight kid for laughter sake although starts well but ends abruptly and one does feel Ajay streched it a bit too long.

THE PROBLEM WITH THE MOVIE

The problem which I have with this movie was the way it was publicised and promoted. When one hears the song, When one sees the promo, they do like to get a birds-eye view of the movie. Take for example the song - Biwi phattey chak deni hai - It showcases the normal tit-tat between husband and wife. Nowhere in the movie even for once Kajol and Ajay were shown indulging in the same. Take another song for example - saiyaan (sunidhi chauhan)...after hearing this song one got an idea that its a movie about what happens after a normal marriage....tit-tats etc...hence anyone can think it is a funny movie....AND THATS WHERE THE PROBLEM LIES....

U me aur hum is a serious movie and the occassional doses of humors (sometimes over the top) do little in easing the tension which is oh-so-well directed by Ajay devgan.

RESULT

People thronged the theaters on weekends/holidays thinking they will have a good laugh and they will go home (and they are not to be blamed because the trailers, the songs and everything points towards this direction)

I have seen and met so many people already who disliked the movie....for the same reason. Its a very serious movie and it should have been promoted like that.

Mind you, I am not against the movie...direction is superb, Kajol is superb....occasional spat between the friends is good, the pakeezah song in the party is good....but then that is all....

(I heard someone saying that the verbal abuses between friends in the movie were uncalled for! Sounds ridiculous to me because when producers can take  liberty to show so much skin and vulgarity example -Choli song in khalnayak etc etc., then why cant they show some of the REAL stuff which the guys do..!!.).

The film conveys the idea nicely but leaves you puzzled and stressed at the end!

See for what this movie wants to tell you...not for what the promotion of this movie will have you believe...

*I wont mention about the inspirations Ajay devgan has taken from the movie notebook  and fifty first dates!!
