Better than a bad cold, almost. Review on Twilight Movie

I should have known better. In fact I did, but I suffered through this movie anyway. It doesn't end there either. It pains me to admit that I sat through 2 more instalments. I'm not a masochist really - just a hopeless optimist...

It all started when my brother in law (he means well, bless him) brought home the first 3 movies of the Twilight series in an effort to make sense of the Twilight epidemic that seems to be rampantly prevalent the world over. Also, he wanted to get up to speed as the latest movie in the series is currently playing. The good news is I won't be throwing away any money on that.

Five minutes into the story and I'm already overwhelmed by the near total absence of acting talent. Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, does little more than look melancholy, and Kristen Stewart as the perpetually sulky Bella Swan, has all the personality and charm of wet cardboard. Their chemistry is non-existent. In fact I'd go so far as to say they make most boring couple in the entire history of motion pictures. The only likeable character in the entire movie, or rather, the entire series so far, is Alice Cullen, portrayed by Ashley Greene.

I'm not totally against books being made into movies. In some cases that's worked out fine. Take the Harry Potter series, the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and the Godfather, to name a few. I just have strong objections to books being mangled in order to cash in on a phenomenon. I haven't read the Twilight books and I won't be reading them either, because unfortunately the movies have robbed me of the ability to visualize the characters for myself.

The Twilight movies are not depressing per se - at least not as depressing as the fact that a majority of people don't seem to get the unbelievable crassness of them. Paints a sad picture of what makes teens tick in this day and age.
