Pancham's Forgotten Melodies

Something really bothered me when I was in India last year. I was shocked to see the number of remixes on the tv. Crap rips of some real good old gems and topped up with some display of flesh. And I guess it works well with the Indian viewers. I remember watching'Kanta Laga' and falling on the floor laughing. Most of the remixes were rips of old RD Burman songs(note: kaanta laga is not a RD number). I'm not really against remixes but not everyone is a Paul Oakenfold.

I couldn't help thinking of some of the rare old songs of RD Burman lost in oblivion. A few crossed my mind and I zeroed on five of them.

1.  Kis Ki Sadayen - Red Rose

A great song from an unheard movie starring Rajesh Khanna and Poonam Dhillon. Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar render this song. You can tell its an RD Burman composition from the very begining.

  1. Aaja Meri Jaan - Aaja Meri Jaan

Title song from the forgetable movie'Aaja Meri Jaan'. This song wasn't included in the movie. But it surely was in the soundtrack. I didn't listen to this song until last year. Picked it up form a friend's CD collection and wow! what an awesome number it was. Rendered by SPB and Anuradha Pauwal. Do you remember the song from Saagar, 'Chehra hai ya Chaand khila hai'. This song is loosely picked up from one of the tunes in the Saagar song.

  1. Kya Bura Hai Kya Bhala - Libaas

Rendered by Late RD himself along with lata. Ironically this Gulzar movie was never released and this song went unheard. Its a fast paced song. Highlight of the song is the lyrics and the variety of instruments and sounds used. RD was popular for his sounds, ain't it?

  1. Ab ke saawan - Jaise ko Taisa

I guess the cover version of this song(Dil Vil Pyar Vyar) became more popular than the original one. IRONIC. Lata and Kishore at their best again. I particularly liked the rythm pattern in this song. The cover version was noway in league with this one.

  1. Rim Jhim Gire(Lata Version) - Manzil

I know this is not a rare one. But I included this song because the Lata version is not even closely popular as the Kishore Kumar one. Trust me, she is absolutely amazing in this song. The'antras' of this song are far different to the Kishore number. Love it when Lata hums'la la la la' in the antra. This part is surely missing in the kishore number. The pace of this Lata version is faster.

Wouldn't it be ironic if such songs got popular due to some hot model dancing half naked to a jarring remix.
