I don't believe in top 20 lists, as they keep on changing all through life. And then to take 20 songs of Rafi, that's a difficult task! There are so many good numbers to choose from. Here is the list of my personal favorites of the countless gems Rafi has given us. And for those who are going to say, how could you not include this and that: I've said that to myself a hundred times while compiling this list.
- 1 Hui Sham Unka Khayal Aa Gaya *
(Mere Humdum Mere Dost - Laxmikant, Pyarelal)
OK, I know very few people would put that as Rafi's best song, but hey! Just listen to it again, with your eyes closed, preferably when you're away from your lover, and then we'll talk. simply the best romantic hindi song ever written IMHO. Look at the emphasis that Rafi puts on the key words.
2 Hum Aur Tum Aur Yeh Sama(Dil Deke Dekho - Shankar, Jaikishan)
Again, this is Rafi at his romantic best. very subtle song. only problem is, it ends soooo soon. Minimum music, excellent rendition.
3 Din Dhal Jaye (Guide - S.D.Burman)
Call me a die-hard romantic, but if this doesn't move your heart, nothing will:).
4 Abhi Na Jao(Hum Dono - Jaidev)
Quintessential duet. It's hard to say who's better - Rafi/Asha. Both are at their naughty best.
5 Paav Chu Lene Do Phoolon Ko(Taaj Mahal - Roshan)
Lucid, as only Rafi can be. Personally, I don't like to make comparisons between Kishore/Rafi/. But show me this lucid lyrical singing by any hindi film singer.
6 Hum Intezaar Karenge(Bahu Begam - Roshan)
In one word, classic.
7 Kahi Ek Masum Najuk Si (Shankar Hussain - Khayyam)
Another subtle gem from the king.
8 Woh Jab Yaad Aaye(Parasmani - Laxmikant, Pyarelal)
The range, even in a romantic song.
9 Man Re Tu Kaahe Na Dhir Dhare(Chitralekha - Roshan)
Bhajans, another of Rafi's specialty. This one is way too special.
10 Main Yeh Soch Kar(Haqeekat - Madan Mohan)
This is another great song. Another huge attraction about this song is the solo violin piece played by Pyarelal
(of the famous LP).
11 Aaja Ke Intezaar Me(Halaku - Shankar, Jaikishan)
Great lyrics, khada aawaz, gives goosebumps.
12 Yeh Mahalo Yeh Takhto(Pyaasa - S.D.Burman)
Who else can give justice to these expressions?
13 Aapke Hasin Rukh Pe(Baharein Phir Aayengi - O.P.Nayyar)
A typical OP melody, but slightly offbeat tune. Goes to show the versatility of this great singer. He makes it
look so easy!
14 Tere Mere Sapne(Guide - S.D.Burman)
More matured singing.
15 Koee saagar dil Ko behlaata naheen(Dil Diya Dard Liya - Naushad)
Had to get at least one Naushad song, or people would kill me!
16 Tu Kahan Yeh Bata(Tere Ghar Ke Samne - S.D.Burman)
17 Aise To Na Dekho(Teen Deviyaan - S.D.Burman)
18 Bahut Shukriya(Ek Musafir Ek Hasina - O.P.Nayyar)
19 Ai Gulbadan(Professor - Shankar, Jaikishan)
20 Pukarata Chala Hun(Mare Sanam - O.P.Nayyar)
Few more romantic gems.
