Mohammad Rafi is certainly the greatest singer of hindi film songs.This humble man from Lahore had it all.He could sing soft, romantic numbers which were certainly his forte.He could also be boisterous, exuberant and give a song loads of energy.The same man could render devotional songs with such depth that you would weep copiously.Such was his genius, such his magnificence.I divide his songs into two groups.Don't take the division seriously, its hard to maintain.So here goes:
*Old Rafi
*1.Abhi Na Jaon Chhodkar(Hum Dono):The classic Rafi, in top form with Ashaji.
2.Kar Chale Hum Fida(Haqeeqat):A song about the unsung indian soldier.Awesome!
3.Yeh Duniya yeh Mehfil(Heer Ranjha):Talk about melancholia.
4.Sun Sun Sun Zalima(Aar Paaar):Playful, chivalrous and naughty.
5.Jane Kahan Mera Jigar(Mr and Mrs 55):A funny, sweetly romantic number.
6.Dil Ka Bhanwar Kare Pukar(Tere Ghar Ke Samnne):Two adults romancing each other in poetry.
7.Tujhe Jivan Ke Dor Se(Asli Naqli):Again a song of beautiful love between two young adults.
8.Saath Haath Badhana(Naya Daur):A song of love and of co-operaation.The spirit comes through nicely.
9.Teri Pyari Pyari Soorat Ko(Sasural):Few songs have been as popular.
10.Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padkhar(Sangam):This was vintage Rafi, all feeling, all style.
*New Rafi
*1.Mast Baharon Ka Main Aashiq(Farz):Oo Oo, if you know what I mean.
2.Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe(Junglee):Full of the throatyness, full of power.
3.Aaj Kal Tere Mere(Brahmchari):A lot of rock n' roll baap!
4.Kya Hua Tera Wada(Hum Kisise Kam Nahin):Rafi and RD means a national award.
5.Parda Hai Parda(Amar Akbar Anthony):A rocking qawwali, a lot of style.
6.Yuhi Tum Mujhse Bat Karti Ho(Sachha Jhootha):Pyar-Vyar sixties ishtyle.
7.Aaj Ki Raat Mere(Ram Aur Shyam): A song at the piano I suppose.
8.Madhuban Mein Radhika Nache(Kohinoor):i think its overrated.
9.Koi Jab Rahna Paye(Dosti):Neither the old Rafi nor the new.
10.Aaj Mausam Bada Beimaan Hai(Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke):May I call this song sensuous?
