20 Best Tragic Songs
May 28, 2013 02:42 PM 112690 Views

Sorrow. Something quite hard to express, something quite hard to openly speak about. However tough a guy may be, however emotionless a person may seem to be, we are all softies in this compartment of the heart. Sorrow is something each person feels, whether it is a break-up, a family argument, the loss of a job, a death of a close one, the betrayal of a friend…whatever. Had a break-up, you plug in your ear-phones, your playlist full of tragic songs. Songs are the most common way to express sorrow, as well as try to lessen it.

Bollywood has contributed to the making of numerous tragic songs all through these years.  Here in this review, I've compiled a list of the twenty most tragic songs which touched my heart. They’re not in any order except for the first one; I just listed them as they came onto my mind.

And, here it goes –

*(1) Yeh Dooriyan (Love Aaj Kal):

Composer: Pritam

Lyricist: Irshad Kamil*

This is one of the best of the best songs I’ve ever heard in any song genre, let alone tragic. This song is actually what one calls beautiful. Sung by Mohit Chauhan, this song expresses sorrow in the loveliest of ways, speaking about the growing distance between two lovers. I feel like cutting out my heart every time I hear this song….I love it so much.

Yeh Dooriyan…..

In raahon ki dooriyan

Nigahon ki dooriyan

Humraahon ki dooriyan

Fanaa ho sabhi dooriyan……

*(2) Tanhaayeen (Dil Chahata Hain):

Composer: Shankar Ehsaan Loy*

Oh! This song…..I have no words. I don’t think anyone who has heard this song can deny feeling the sorrow and hurt which the singer exhibits. One of the most beautifully sung songs ever and hats off to Sonu Nigam for creating such a wonderful song.

Dil Ke Raaste Mein

Kaisi Thokar Maine Khaayi

Toote Khwaab Saare Ek Mayusi Hai Chhayi

Har Khushi So Gayi Zindagi Kho Gayi

*(3) Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (KANK):

Composer: Shankar Ehsaan Loy

Lyricist: Javed Akhtar*

I feel this song has its own beauty and simplicity. This song speaks about the pain and loss of two lovers separated in their ways and how…yet, they are not ready to say goodbye. Sung by Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam, this is one among those songs which can truly express sorrow in the most beautiful of ways….

Tum ko bhi hai khabar

Mujhko bhi hai pata

Ho raha hai judaa

Dono ka raasta

*(4) Alvida (Life In A Metro):

Composer: Pritam*

This song…..has passion. One can feel it immediately when one hears this song. This song brings out the sorrow and hurt of the heart in such a passionate way…., it actually feels like opening up your heart and shouting out loudly and pouring out all the pent-up sorrow. One of the best songs ever made, this song is sung by KK.

Alvida Alvida

Meri raahein alvida

Meri saansein kehti hai Alvida

Alvida alvida Abb kehna aur kya

Jab tune keh diya Alvida

*(5) Yariyan (Cocktail):

Composer: Pritam

Lyricist: Irshad Kamil*

Not as good as the songs above mentioned, but I had to add this on this list. Not exactly a song which can make you cry, it doesn’t even make you, like, really sad. But I love this song anyway, love it for the lyrics, the meaning, the singer (Mohan Kanan and Shilpa Rao)…everything. And since it is supposed to be a tragic song, added this in the review.

Alvida yaara alvida

Ho rahe tumse hum judaa

Le chale saare gham tere

Khush rahe yaara tu sadaa

*(6) Mar Jaiyaan (Vicky donor):

Composer: AR Rahman

Lyricist: Javed Akhtar*

This song is yet another wonder…..I just LOVE the feel of the song. I think basically it is the singers’ works, they sing in such a way it’s as if it was for real. This song has romance, it has sorrow….yes, it’s a little on the melodramatic side (the lovers speak of dying without one another!) but overall, it is another beautiful song, sung by Vishal Dadlani and Sunidhi Chauhan.

Lamhe vehle lamhe, vehle pal yeh

Idhar udhar tehal rahe

Sehme sehme dil bhi

Keh rahe hai, bina tere

Mar jayian, tere bin mar jayian

*(7) Jee Le Zara (Talaash):

Composer: Ram Sampath

Lyricist: Javed Akhtar*

This is yet another magical song by Vishal Dadlani…..no one other than his voice could’ve suited such a passionate song. This song is just plain beautiful and a must hear for a sorrowful heart.

Main hoon gumsum tu bhi khamosh hai

Sach hai samay ka hi sab dosh hai

Dhadkan dhadkan ik gham rehta hai

*(8) Bhare Naina (Ra One):

Composer: Vishal - Shekhar

Lyricist: Panchhi Jalonvi*

Just couldn’t resist adding this song. This song beautifully portrays the feelings of a woman who doesn’t know how to survive when her lover/husband leaves (for another girl, death whatsoever).  Very well sung by Nandini Srikar who has a unique and soulful voice, the song was the only good thing about Ra One :)

Kyun na bole mo se mohan kyun

Hai roothe roothe mohan yun

Kaise manaaun haai kaise manaau

*(9) Tadap tadap ke is dil se (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam):

Composer: Ismail Darbar*

This is yet another wonderful song sung by KK which brings out the heart’s emotions in a very nice way. Though a little older than the songs added, this song is a must for this list.

Tadap Tadapke Is Dil Se Aah Nikalti Rahi Hai

Mujhko Saza Di Pyaar Ki Aisa Kya Gunaah Kiya

To Lut Gaye Haan Lut Gaye

*(10) Do Pal Ki Thi (Veer-Zaara):

Composer: Madan Mohan*

This song is just pure magic in the voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Sonu Nigam.

Do pal ruka

Khwaabon ka karwan

Aur phir chal diye

Tum kahan hum kahan

*(11) Ae Ajnabi (Dil Se):

Composer: AR Rahman

Lyricist: Gulzar*

Udit Narayan actually makes you want to cry with him after listening to this song. Beautiful portrayal of all the feelings, hurt, grief, anguish but above all, love. Hats off to him for creating such a masterpiece.

Ae Ajnabi Tu Bhi Kabhi Aawaaz De Kahin Se

Main Yahan Tukdon Mein Ji Raha Hoon

*(12) Jiyen Kyun (Dum Maaro Dum):

Composer: Pritam

Lyricist: Jaideep Sahni*

Papon……a wonder! The singer of this not-so-famous song and what a voice!! I love the passion and anguish which can be felt in this song....Do hear.

Gaye tum gaye ho kyun, yeh raat baaki hai

Gaye tum gaye ho kyun, saath baaki hai

*(13) Noor-E-Khuda (My Name Is Khan):

Composer: Shankar Ehsaan Loy

Lyricist: Niranjan Iyengar*

This song is really beautiful. It does not really much of a tragic feel to it, but yet is a wonderful song, sung by Adnan Sami,Shreya Ghoshal,Shankar Mahadevan

Ajnabi mod hai

Kauf Har aur hai

Har Nazar pe dhuan Cha gaya

*(14) Maa (Taare Zameen Par):

Composer: Shankar Ehsaan Loy

Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi*

This song can really make anyone cry. One can start crying after just listening to the lyrics of the song. A beautiful, sorrowful song, sung by Shankar Mahadevan.

Mein kabhi batlata nahi

Par andhere se darta

Hoon mein maa

*(15) Tu Jaane Na (Ajab Prem Ki...)

Composer: Pritam*

Another beautiful song, in the voice of Atif Aslam. This song is indeed full of sorrow, as it describes the emotions of a guy who cannot tell the girl about the feelings.....and the pain he is in. Must hear for everyone.

kaise bataaye

kyun tujhako chaahe,

yaara bata na paaye

*(16) Give Me Some Sunshine (3 Idiots):

Composer: Shantanu Moitra

Lyricist: Swanand Kirkire*

A masterpiece of a song, this track is just lovely to hear. This song is perfect and though it is a sad song, it also brings about a freshness, a bright spot in our life when we hear this. Sung by Suraj Jagan and Sharman Joshi

Give me some sunshine

Give me some rain

Give me another chance

I wanna grow up once again

*(17) Sun Le Dua (We Are Family):

Composer: Shankar Ehsaan Loy

Lyricist: Irshad Kamil*

This song is another beauty. With the use of minimal instruments, it is sung by Bela Shende.

Tu jo gayi toh sona hoga yeh jahaan

Pheeki pheeki hogi saari yeh daastan
