A stroke of melancholy

When we come to the world the first thing we do is, we cry. It is this crying of the newborn that brings smile to the faces of the family. The doctors and the nurses in the labour room try all methods to make the baby cry, the most pleasant sound that is heard after the tension and the pain the mother has to bear to bring the new one to the world.

Sorrows, pain, agony are the feelings that are a part of our lives and will always accompany us in all ages. Whether a child, a youth or a grown up person, even our old days will not be not spared. We run after happiness that is like a short-lived fragrance that comes and goes away, but sorrows are our definite long companions that stay with us forever.

No wonder all forms of art have been flourished and enriched by the feelings of sadness, sorrows, pathos, whether it is literature, paintings, sculpture or music. Whether it is the Monalisa by Da Vinci or Julius Ceaser by Shakespere, The Tale of Two Cities by Dickens or Devdas by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee. All have lived forever and have become immortal and more precious with time.

Music can?t be left behind in depicting pain and agony, the melodies that have in-depth pathos and melancholy have always been close to our hearts. We may dance to the beats of a fast track and laugh and make merry to yoodleying numbers but when we are sad and depressed it is often a melody or a song of pathos that touches our souls. At times when we would not like to show our tears even to ourselves, just put off all lights and switch to any soft and sad number, two drops of tears would make us feel better. Some of the songs that are close to my heart and soul -

  1. Yeh duniyan agar mil bhi jaye to kya hai? Film Pyaasa, Mohd. Rafi, This particular number from the GuruDutt?s masterpiece has always made me think on really what would I ask for in life, love, passion, friends, money or something else that cannot be described in words.

  2. Toote huye khwabon ne humko yeh sikhaya hai? Madhumati, Mohd. Rafi. The lyrics of this song are so beautiful that I don?t think any soul can leave without having a choked throat and numbness in his eyes after listening to this song. Rafi Saab?s voice has added to the depth of this song.

  3. Din dhal jaye hai raat na jaye, tu jo na aaye, teri yaad sataye.? Guide, Mohd. Rafi, I think every soul would love to hear this song while remembering someone special. It has something in it that can touch your sentiments.

  4. Jalte hain jinke liye, teri aankhon ke diye, dhoond laya hun wohi geet mein tere liye? - Sujata, Talat Mehmood. The softness of melody of this song has always taken me to another world whenever I have listened to this wonderful song. Talat Mehmood?s soft voice has rendered to the effectiveness of this piece of beauty, I think every soul would love to hear this number from their beloved over the phone, any day!

  5. Raat aur din, diya jale, mere mann mein phir bhi andhiyara hai? Raat aur Din, Mukesh. Yes amidst all the happiness?s that we may counter in life yet if we don?t have our loved ones all those happiness count to nothing. This feeling is so very well described in this song.

  6. Jeena yahan marna yahan, iske siwa jana kahan? Mera naam joker, Mukesh. The lyrics are so rich that even those people who are not drawn towards sad songs cant stop lending their ears to this number. This song brings about an essence of our attachment to the rest of the world. This film has given us many beautiful numbers to hum in our pastime. Another lovely but sad song from the same film is Jane kahan gaye who din?, again sung by Mukeshji.

  7. Jaaun kahan bata aye dil, duniyan badi hai., Chhoti Bahen, Mukesh. The melody of this song is so beautiful that it can move even the hardest soul on earth. Truly when one is hurt and abandoned where should you go and on what should you take solace in. May be this song can give you a bit of calmness that you need.

  8. O jaane wale ho sake to laut aana., Bandini, Mukesh. This song has such pain hidden in its flow that whenever I hear it an unknown fear of parting fills me up but still I cant stay away from this song for long.

  9. O re maanjhi, mere sajan hai uss paar, main iss paar?, Bandini, S D Burman. This song imparts a complete feeling of parting and abandoned that we are afraid to face but might have to come across in our lives some day or the other. A line from this song that always bring tears to my eyes is-?mann ki kitaab se tum, mera naam hi mita dena?

  10. Woh shaam kuchh ajeeb thi, yeh shaam bhi ajeeb hai., Khamoshi, Kishore Kumar. This song has magic in it the words build up a feeling of an uncertain bonding. So close yet so far away, this feeling is expressed so well in the words of this beautiful number.

  11. Chingari koyi bhadke, to sawan use bujhaye., Amar prem, Kishore Kumar. I think there are very few people who love to hear Kishore Kumar and don?t like this song. The lyrics, the music and the voice all do magic to the ears of the listener.

  12. Kiska rasta dekhe, aye dil aye saudayee, milon hai khamoshi, barson hai tanhayee., Joshila, Kishore Kumar. Nothing waits, life moves as it comes but still we love to wait and experience the grief that life has bestowed us with.

  13. Kya khabar kya pata, kya khushi hai gham hai kya?, Saaheb, Kishore Kumar. This song always makes me cry, even if I am happy and I hear this song a sudden pain and agony fills me up. A song that makes you think over what you have achieved in life.

  14. Zindagi ka safar, hai yeh kaisa safar?, Safar, Kishore Kumar. This song takes us through our journey through life. Such a short life and so much to achieve, will we succeed in getting all that we aspire for or will death snatch everything that we could accumulate.

  15. Sur na saje kya gayoon mein, sur ke bina, jeewan suna., Basant Bahar, Manna Dey.

  16. Koyi gata main so jata, such sapnon mein kho jata?, Alaap, Yehsudas

The two songs mentioned just above are from my favorite list and both the songs have a hidden melancholy within it that makes them such wonderful songs. The song from Alaap brings about a feeling of separation and an unknown fear of death.

I mostly like sad numbers in male voices than in female voices but there are songs sung by female singers that touches my heart and soul and will always stay very close to me. This list is also very big just a few to mention in this list -

  1. Lag ja gale ki phir haseen raat ho na ho, Woh kaun thi, Lata Mangeshkar

  2. Ajeeb dastan hai yeh kahan shuru kahan khatam?, Dil apna preet parayee, Lata Mangeshkar

  3. Chalte chalte, yuhin koyi mil gaya tha, sarre raah chalte chalte?, Pakeezah, Lata Mangeshkar.

  4. Khali haath shaam ayee hai, khali laut jayegi., Izaazat, Asha Bhonsle

  5. Mera kuchh saman, tumhare pass, padha hai?, Izaazat, Asha Bhonsle
