Rote hue....

My 1.5 cents worth of philosophy  (it is not yet 2 cents, since it is not yet tested)

While laughter is the best medicine and lightens the heart, once in a while it is good to become sad and let those tears flow. Once you have reached rock bottom, the only way is UP. This will make you realize that life is not that bad and will give you the inner strength and resolve to continue the journey….(Sorry Reeper, you can keep the soul fryer on the back burner)

Hasna hain to jabbad phaad ke hanso

Rona hain toh dil khol ke roa

Bollywood has a treasure chest full of “radku” songs and here are some of my favorites.

# 1. chaahuungaa main tujhe saanjh savere

phir bhii kabhii ab naam ko tere

aavaaz main na duungaa….

Md.Rafi in “Dosti”. One can feel the pangs of friendship and betrayal in this song – the blind calling to his best friend – the lame. What pathos.

# 2. nafarat kii duniya ko chhod ke

pyaar kii duniyaa men

khush rahanaa mere yaar

is jhuuthakii nagarii ko chhod ke, gaataa jaa pyaare

amar rahe teraa pyaar

Md.Rafi in “Haathi Mere Saathi”. Animals are man’s best friends and cruelty to them should not be tolerated. This is a song for all animal lovers.

# 3.  donon ne kiyaa thaa pyaar magar

mujhe yaad rahaa tuu bhuul gaii

maine tere liye re jag chhodaa

tu mujhako chhod chalii

Md.Rafi in “Mahua”. The pangs of a lover who has lost his love to death – poetically described as Maut ki Neend.

# 4. kah do koii na kare yahaan pyaar

is men kushiyaan hain kam

beshumaar hain gam

ek hansii aur aansuu hazaar

Md.Rafi in “Goonj Uthi Shenai” sings about the futilities of love.

# 5. Tujhe suraj kahoon ya chanda

tujhe deep kahu ya tara

mera naam karega roshan

jag mein mera raaj dulara.

This is every  parents’ dream that their child does better than themselves. Beautifully sung by Manna Dey(I am not sure of the movie)

# 6. Behna o behna

teri doli main sajaunga.

Mukesh in “Adalat”. Marriages are a happy occasion and a sad occasion. Especially the marriage of a sister – ask any brother. These songs on the occasion of a sisters marriage always brings a tear.

# 7. dost dost na rahaa

pyaar pyaar naa rahaa

zindagii hamen teraa

aitabaar naa rahaa …

Mukesh in “Sangam”. Good friends are difficult to find and when they double cross then it becomes very tragic.

# 8. Bana ke kyun bigada re.

bigada re naseeba

upparwale, upparwale

Lata in “Zanjeer”. How many times we have been through this – everything looks hunky-dory and all of a sudden, things change… call it fate, call it destiny – it shows man’s helplessness and futility.

# 9. main to bhuul chalii baabul kaa des

piyaa kaa ghar pyaaraa lage

koii maike ko de do sandes

Lata in “Saraswati Chandra”. A girl when she is leaving for her in-laws place is also a sad event. Well portrayed in this song.

# 10. kab safal hogi teri aradhana

kahe ko roye…

A gem of a song by SD Burman in “Aradhana”. Tears are useless and one must endure life.

# 11. kasame vaade pyaar vafaa sab

baaten hain baaton kaa kyaa

koi kisii kaa nahiin ye jhuuthe

naate hain naaton kaa kyaa

Manna Dey in “Upkar”. Promises and Love are mere words to be broken – a very sad commentary on relationships.

# 12. dukhii man mere sun meraa kahanaa

jahaan nahiin chainaa vahaan nahiin rahanaa

Kishore Kumar in “Funtoosh”. Try to console the mind to overcome restlessness.

# 13. aansuu bharii hain ye jiivan kii raahen

koii unase kah de hamen bhuul jaaen

Mukesh in “Parvarish”. Jilted in love and the ultimate sacrificial song.

# 14. aaj puraanii raahon se

koi mujhe aavaaz na de

dard men duube giitna de

gam kaa sisakataa saaz na de

Md.Rafi in “Aadmi”. Painful memories are best forgotten. How true.

# 15. aavaaz deke hamen tum bulaao

mohabbat men itanaa naa hamako sataao

Md.Rafi and Lata in “Professor”. A sad love song between two lovers.

# 16. ai mere pyaare vatan

ai mere bichhade chaman

tujh pe dil qurabaan

tuu hii merii aarazuu, tuu hii merii aabaruu

tuu hii merii jaan

Manna Dey in “Cabulivalla”. A patriotic song. The heart brims with pride.

# 17. chal rii sajanii ab kyaa soche

kajaraa naa baha jaaye rote rote

chal rii sajanii ab kyaa soche

Mukesh in “Bombay ka Babu”. He is imploring the lover not to cry.

# 18. dil ke tukade tukade karake

muskuraate chal diye

jaate jaate ye to bataa jaa

ham jiyenge kisake liye

Yesudas in “Dada”. The heart is broken and there is no reason to continue living.

# 19. Gam uthaane ke liye main to jiye jaauungaa

saans kii lay pe teraa naam liye jaauungaa

Md.Rafi in “Mere Huzoor”. Is the whole purpose in life to bear sorrow?

# 20. ai mere vatan ke logon

zaraa aankh mein bhar lo paanii

jo shahiid hue hain unakii

zaraa yaad karo qurabaanii

This is by Lata(non filmi). We used to sing this song in school on the occasion of Republic Day and Independence Day. It is said that the first time Lata sang this song – even Jawaharlal Nehru had tears in his eyes.

Thank You Rek for starting the trend. I tried to ensure that I have not repeated the songs from your list which I agree completely with.

Some of my comments on the songs may be short – the beauty of these songs is to just listen to them and absorb their meaning.

Enjoy, I mean “Be Sad”, I mean Enjoy being Sad.
