Songs that make you think

There are songs and then there are songs that define life, relationships, love - differently from what we see them as everyerday.

  1. Koi yeh kaise bataye ki wo tanha kyon hai

I’ve put this song on the top of my list because it defines the innate loneliness of an individual. That loneliness that comes from being surrounded by people and yet alone. And it defines the face of changing relationships-

Who jo apna tha wohi or kisi ka kyon hai

And the pointblank questions that it asks of us-

Yehi duniya hai to aakhir yehi duniya kyon hai

Yehi hota hai to aakhir yehi hota kyon hai

  1. Do naina or ek kahani

This song second because it relates the way life unfolds – almost as if it belongs to someone else.

Thoda sa baadal, thoda sa paani – or ek kahani

Defining the pain and sorrow that a story makes and only makes you smile – after it is over.

  1. Ya dil ki suno duniya walon ya mujhko abhi chup rahne do

Main gham ko khushi kaise kah doon jo kahte hain unko kahne do

Protesting about the basic hypocriscy of life – of putting on faces. Pretending  - to be somebody else, something else.

  1. Wafa jo tumse kabhi maine nibhai hoti, umr na muft main sadkon pe gawayi hoti

Lesser known song from Daddy. This song certainly can’t be for any lover – first be faithful to yourself – to your own life, it says.

  1. Mujh se naraaz ho to ho jao, khud se lekin khafa-khafa na raho

Mujh se tum door ho to ho jao, khud se lekin juda-juda na raho

This song contains the best advice that a dad can ever give to his daughter. Its not just this much – there’s a part that I can’t remember that puts very beautifully the idea of being strong, of relying on yourself.

  1. Katra-katra milti hai, katra-katra jeene do zindagi hai

Is a quiet and joyful celebration of life. You can only find happiness in bits and pieces, it says.

Pyaasi hoon main pyasi rahne do – rahne do na

Just let me be.

  1. Koi gesu koi aahat hamen awaz na de.

More of just let me be.

  1. Zindagi mere ghar aana, aana zindagi.

Inviting life home to come and engulf you in its arms and embracing it with everything it has to offer. This is one of my all-time favourites.

I’m going to wind up with an unexpected one –

  1. Dekh le

Its beat is the very beat of life – for one who walks in the shadow of death.

Jeevan ke pal hain char yad rakh,

Marna hai ek bar yad rakh

Marne se jeena dekh le

Other songs on this list are –

  1. yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaye to kya hai

  2. Zindagi ka safar

  3. Zindagi kaisi hai paheli

Is this getting to be depressing for you?

Then thank your stars I couldn't find twenty!

I wish I could add something about movies and singers - but i'm a big zero in that section. can anybody help out here?

P.S. - I compiled this list, but would love to have the same review from someone else – as I’m sure there are many songs that I’ve missed. Please feel free to add them in the comments or in another review.
