TROY:

German Director Wolfgang Petersen, after his much acclaimed “Das Boot”, gives the audience an all-star extravaganza of epic proportions. With the kind of collections made globally by the movie, TROY is sure to create a huge hoopla at the next Oscars.

The story is based on Homer’s Illiad, the story of Helen of Sparta, the wife of the brother of Emperor Agamemnon of Greece, who elopes with Paris, the younger prince of Troy, the legendary city protected by the sun God Apollo. Agamemnon enlists the help of the Greek hero Achilles, portrayed convincingly by Brad pitt, to defeat the armies of Troy, led by Hector, the elder prince, another undefeatable Greek hero. Eric Bana (The Hulk) gives an award-winning performance as Hector.Although the main focus of the movie is on Achilles, it is Hector who wins the sympathy of the audiences,as the honorable warrior fighting to defend his land.Peter O’Toole gives a wonderful performance as King Priam of Troy, especially in his emotion-wrought conversation with Achilles, which is one of the hallmarks of the movie. It is only Paris, played by Orlando Bloom, who gives the impression of a wimp, when he runs away from the battlefield. Not much more can be said for Diane Kruger, who plays an insipid role as Helen. Moreover, very little Helenic beauty is seen in the actress, and she comes off as very unsuitable for the role she portrays. The opening scene of the movie begins with a battle between the armies of Agamemnon and the King of Thessaly.Pitt makes his entry in this scene, slaying the bravest Thessalian warrior to win the battle, and gloriously asks the Thessalians, “Is there no one else?”Which drew numerous catcalls and wolf whistles from the audience. Another hallmark scene of the movie is the battle between Hector and Achilles, which has a Balletic grace to it.

The strength of the storyline, the performances and the superb special effects, backed up with a solid background score make this movie a must see for all moviegoers who wish to have some substantial entertainment.
