Ah, shampoos. That ubiquitous bottle which sits on your bathroom shelf and seems to last forever. Just a little bit, a bit of lather and your hair is washed faster that you know it. Unlike soaps, Shampoos have stayed more or less resolutely the same over all these years. Sure, you have go conditioners and other products added to the hair care range, but shampoos are a staple. If you have a favourite e.g. Sunsilk, Pantene, Head & Shoulder’s, Himalaya, Nyle, Garnier etc. its unlikely that you will change the next time you are looking for a shampoo in the departmental store.
Coming across Tresemme
Still, Tresemme. I came across it when it first launched a couple of years ago. And I was immediately intrigued. After all, here was a shampoo bottle which was all black, with just a hint of colour representing the different variants. It appealed to me instantly. All other shampoo’s with their multi-coloured bottled seemed juvenile by comparison. Besides, isn’t the black the predominant hair colour in India. Yes, the bottle should be black.
Still, I did not buy it and stuck to my old favourite Garnier Fructis. Why? Because it looked expensive. I don’t what it was, but the design of the bottle exudes classiness and to be frank, expensiveness. He fact that it’s tagline read ‘Used by Professionals’ further dissuaded me from picking one up.
Surprising Price
But one day, my favourite Garnier was not in stock, so I decided to pick up a 225ml bottle of Tresemme Smooth & Shine Shampoo. Lo and Behold, it was not expensive at all, but priced at par with all the other shampoos. A 225ml bottle cost Rs. 145, a 100ml bottle Rs. 70, and the large 600ml pump bottle – Rs. 340. Yes, it was priced a bit more than my Garnier, but only Rs. 20 more, and the quantity being 50 ml more per bottle, the price per ml works out to almost the same.
Still, does it work?
Now keep in mind this I’m using this product for men’s hair. I do not know how well it would work for women’s hair.
A first impression, the shampoo is an ivory white in colour, a nice contrast with the completely black bottle. Unlike some other shampoo’s it does not overpower you with its fragrance, which is a big plus, in my opinion.
But the proof of its effectiveness comes in the washing. Surprisingly, you need a very small amount to wash your hair. Just pouring the size of a 1cm diameter coin on your palm and you are ready to wash your hair completely. That is because the shampoo lathers rather well, a must for any good shampoo.
My hair felt clean and smooth after the washing, but there was another benefit to using this shampoo. Even though it was not the Hair Fall Defense variant, I found that my hair fall has reduced considerably after sing this shampoo, especially compared to my earlier Garnier. Visible hair loss after a wash has reduced by almost 75 per cent, which is a huge improvement. Also, the shampoo does not smell much after a wash, which is a good, as I do not want it clashing with other fragranes like hair oil or deodorant.
Conclusion
A Shampoo is meant to do a few things and do them well.
Tresemme’s shampoos pass all these tests with flying colours, and are my go-to shampoo of choice. I don’t think I’ll be switching to any other brand anytime soon.
