You maycall them formulae, but I will prefere the word characteristic for various eras of bollywood movies. These characteristics were very popular and were considered as very necessary ingredients for different periods of hindi film, lets have a look:
40's era
Movies that have taken place of theaters still had theaters' hang over. Lots of songs (even more then 20 in a film) , loud theaterical kinda acting, mix hindu muslim culture due to teh hang over of pre independence era, charlie chaplin kinda annoying comedians and lots of mythological and hindu dev-malai impression were the formulas / characteristics of tha tera.
5o's period
MOvies of that era tried to got rid of theatrical hangover a lot but still there were too many songs and loud acting at places. Artificial mountains and villages that were created in the movie floors, artifical trees and plants with paper flowers , a very sentimental angle of MAA-BETA relation and extremely sensitive childhood love were the favourite ingredients of that era of history.
60's and 70's era
The favourite formulas were almost same for that era. Bell bottom, big wigs and tacky brown hair color was very popular.
a song with extremly fast break dance steps and full body movements liek one is in state of electrical shock, was must in that era's pictures.
also the suit boot and western like trend and depicting western lifestyle was another characteristic of that era's movies.
80's era
Non stop action (thnx to sholay), police and mujrim real brothers, disco songs with heroine wearing a long strip on her forehead and shining clothes were pet formulas of 80's.
90's era
due to the two trend setters maine pyar kiya and HAKHK, love , romance, wedding scenes was important part of that era. also the songs picturised in OuTI and shimla's specific places where clouds in front of u was teh fav. locality of 90's songs.
Moreover tacky extras in teh course songs having childish frocks and bow on heads doing silly dance steps was also a memorable ingredient of 90's.
2000's scenario
And now in this current hi fi age, you can see internet and webcam chat scenes, showing computers aplenty, cell phones and flavour of globalization is clearly visible and are pet formulas . Also the mod models takes place of lower type tacky extras, dances and songs trying to show something intelligent and abstract and yes teh aging AB and SRK are the favourite formulas for a successful movie nowadays.
