For an American fashion company that exploded commercially across the gamut of American socioeconomic and racial lines in the 1990's and owed everything to Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren for paving the way in the 1980's, their first utterly commercial foray into the world of men's fragrance was a massive success and impressive standard that has never been eclipsed by the Hilfiger team 20 years to the day.

What started as an ambitious statement to announce Tommy Hilfiger's line of jeans and clothing had transformed into a massive nationwide boutique in the vein of the aforementioned giants of American men's fashion by stepping into the stratus of high-profit margin accessory products to round-out the space in their mall boutiques ended in this stellar commercial success by Alberto Morillas and Annie Buzantian. Given the generous budget and free space for Morillas to work, this one came out a remarkable success by capitalizing on the precedent of Hugo Boss' recent Hugo success by combining the apple, musk and Pacific forest shore feel with a cleaner, puffier, more aromatic heart that while indebted to Hugo, makes its own clear statement by pursuing a more inventive and creative path towards the same overall accords.

Tommy is an apple over fabric softener soapy scent with just enough depth in its note background to balance itself finely into an all-encompassing green, citrus, spice and aromatic fragrances with remarkable versatility and solid performance for a spring/summer staple. The apple, cotton flower, cranberry and soft touch of rose and lavender stand out in modern reformulations, asserting more control over the bergamot and grapefruit that were more dominant in the original 90's formulations.

For a designer mall fragrance that didn't necessarily have to be good to initially sell, backed by the Hilfiger name in its prime, this certainly exceed all expectations and became a staple of the 90's and early 00's for summer wear until Polo Blue surfaced and changed the MARKET direction of aquatics away from the more synthetic juices like Hugo, CK One and Tommy.

Overall this is a very reliable and solid wear, though a bit heavy when approaching anything over 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This works best in the 65-80 degree range, especially in the AM and PM, as it tends to get sticky in the heat. For a summer staple, performance on Tommy is very solid at 4-7 hours and sillage is decently moderate but never overly-imposing or overly-weak. Worth picking up over some of the more expensive modern designer releases on the MARKET that don't add nearly as much versatility to your summer wardrobe as this one.
